This SMS-based social networking site, called Twitter offers both social networking and micro-blogging at the same time. The creation of Twitter was on July 15, 2006 with a first tweet saying "just setting up my twttr" by the head founder himself Jack Dorsey, among many others.
The first prototype of Twitter was launched for Odeo employees, before the public launching on the above mentioned date. Since then, Twitter became one of the most used service around the world. It has received both good and bad criticisms alike.

M$The idea of Twitter was born out of the ideas generated by board members of Odeo, the podcasting company. The main brain behind it was Jack Dorsey, who got the idea of allowing a person to use SMS to keep in touch with the group. Initially the project was called “twttr”, as it derived its name from Flickr and the American SMS short codes, which are 5 characters long.
The initial version of Twitter was used for testing purposes by the employees of Odeo. On 15th July 2006, it was first mad available to the public. Biz Stone, Evan Williams, Dorsey, and other members of Odeo started Obvious Corporation in October 2006, and took over Odeo and all its assets, including Twitter.com from the shareholders and investors. In April 2007, Twitter became an independent company.
The aim was to allow users to keep in touch with their contacts while on the go. There was no need to be stuck at the desk, in order to be in touch with his friends.
