I like Christopher Meloni, too. Hargitay's looking better than ever in this SVU cover shoot video, which I'd never seen before today. They're both funny as hell, too, which I figured they must be if they played their serious roles on L&O so well.
Vencent D'Onofrio's character astounds me with the over-analysis--it's like, "Who knows that stuff or would ever think of it?"
(It must be that Law & Order Marathon I've been watching on and off...I actually saw Orbach as a defense attorney in one last night--must have been a very early one, with Paul Sorvino.)

M$Childish, yes. Fun, absolutely. Even my teenage son sits around with us to catch up on the latest escapades at Psych!
Thank you for asking.
Personal experience, (I watch too much tv)

M$Then came Magnum, who did have a first name, which he wore surprisingly comfortably, while managing to make gorgeous and goofy synonymous, while solving cases that threaten even a laid-back paradise. His fate with dogs was not so fortuitous, as "the lads" regularly wielded their Doberman powers, aided by Jonathan, to lord it over him.
But then along came Adrian Monk, and the baton was passed to such a brilliant mind, that even his deeply wounded psyche cannot prevent him from saving the day despite painfully phobic barriers.
So who wins this three way tie? Monk gets my top vote for the show's rare ability to weave seamlessly and satisfyingly back and forth between quirk-laden comedy, and deeply dramatic suspense, with equal authority due in no small part to the talents of Tony Shalhoub himself.
Now please cash that check Mr. Monk, your assistant needs to eat!

M$Oh, I totally forgot about Monk! I haven't seen that show in ages. Yes, I would add Monk to the list of MANY great detectives on television. His OCD, mysterious past, and strange behaviors all make for a great drama -- but somehow also help him solve crimes like crazy. Great show and great character!

M$I'd like to point out Lenny Briscoe & Detective Green on the original Law & Order, though. I love Lenny's cynicism and I always thought the two of them made a great partnership.
As for shows BESIDES Law & Order, I always loved seeing Jack Malone on Without a Trace (remember this show?). I loved his way of thinking outside of the box, and his unconventional ways of bringing a criminal to justice. And the personal drama in his life and between the characters on the show added to this.
And finally - my newest obsession - NCIS. Yes, the show obviously has underlying humor and satire to it, but Agent Anthony DiNozzo and Ms. Agent Ziva David have GREAT chemistry, as co-workers and characters in general. And then you have Agent McGee, who is hilariously smart at computers and a "probie" at being a detective. Then you also have Leroy Gibbs ("boss") who is cunning, mysterious, and played MARVELOUSLY by Mark Harmon. Kudos to NCIS, as the whole team (even the ME & forensic scientist) - they all are really funny and interesting, which gives the show an A+ in my world.
Watching tooo much crime drama.
