As of January of 2010, the United States Senators for the state of Illinois are Democrat Richard “Dick” Durbin and Republican Mark Kirk. Dick Durbin is currently the Assistant Majority Leader (also called the Majority Whip) of the US Senate. Durbin has been a Senator from Illinois since he was first elected in 1996 (he was subsequently re-elected in 2002 and 2008).
Mark Kirk was elected in November of 2010 to fill the seat vacated by Roland Burris (who had been appointed to fill the vacated seat of President Barack Obama by then Governor Rod Blagojevich. Kirk beat out Democratic challenger Alexi Giannoulias in a very closely contested election.
