Who are the most talented drummers in Jazz history?

Each credible player has unique talents; keeping time, changing the beats, implementing unique rhythms to the genre.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

One drummer you should really consider is Jimmy Cobb. He played with Miles Davis during the late 50's and 60's and is the drummer on "Kind of Blue" which may be the best jazz combo record of all time. Though not as famous as a lot of other drummers, he had the incredible talent to make this recording an all time classic. It's full of favorite tunes for me... especially "So What"... Check this guy out... He's the real deal.

I would have to say Jack Dejohnette. Not only is he a great drummer, but he is also a talented pianist and composer.

Elvin Jones set a style of drumming that was as original and personal as his friend saxophonist John Coltrane whom he accompanied along with another hugely original player, McCoy Tyner on piano.

The most talented drummer is Steve Gadd, no question about it.
