The Hidatsa Indian Tribe is one of the Three Affiliated Tribes ( Hidatsa, Mandan , Arikara Nation). They are Siouan people , and their language is related to the language of Crows.
The Hidatsa Indian Tribe lived in the area of Devil's Lake, in MIniwakan, North Dakota, but later they were forced to migrate south-westward by the Lakota Indian Tribe. Finally, the Hidatsa Tribe met the Mandan Tribe near the Heart River, and they have settled in this region. The two tribes formed an alliance, and they have lived and hunted in the area of Heart River - Knife River - Missouri River.
In 1837-1838, a smallpox epidemic reduced the Hidatsa population to 500 people. This small group has united with Mandan Tribe, and they have settled near Fort Berthold.
