Who are the best third basemen of all time?
At the top of most people's list are Mike Schmidt and Brooks Robinson. George Brett is also frequently mentioned. Does Alex Rodriguez make this list? I wonder because he played shortstop for several years first and the controversy of him using steroids. Any thoughts on this?

I think Mike Schmidt is the best third baseman in baseball history. He won 10 Gold Glove Awards, hit 548 home runs, won three Most Valuable Player awards and is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Brooks Robinson won more Glove Glove awards with 16, but he wasn't nearly the hitter that Schmidt was. I can't count Alex Rodriguez because he wasn't a third baseman his whole career and his batting numbers are skewed due to his performance enhanching drugs. He only started playing third base in 2004 and played his first 10 seasons as a shortstop. He hasn't put up the defensive numbers as Schmidt and Robinson either. George Brett was a great pure hitter, but he wasn't a great defensive player and played several years as a designated hitter at the end of his career. I might be a bit biased since I watched Schmidt play for 13 years as a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, but Schmidt is widely regarded by baseball experts as the best to ever play third base.
