Who are the best NFL television commentators?

Who are the smartest and provide the best insight to the game?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The are several good NFL commentators. I will list some by network. On ESPN former NFL quarterback Ron Jaworski and former NFL head coach Jon Gruden are very knowledgable and give great insight to what's going on during the game. On FOX, Jimmy Johnson, former Super Bowl winning coach of the Dallas Cowboys, is very good at predicting games and almost always has some good insight on various types of plays and strategies that might be used by teams during the games for that day. During the games, I enjoy Troy Aikman on FOX and Phil Simms on NBC. Simms, a former quarterback, is very analytical and appears highly intelligent. During his prime, John Madden was the best color commentator. He since retired but he paved the way for the commentators of today.

When it comes to NFL commentators I think the list at the top is fairly short. There are only a handful of guys that I think really do a good job clearly talking about the game in a way that provides insight to the average fan. Here are my top 3:
1. Cris Collinsworth – Hands down the best commentator in my opinion. He has an incredible ability to watch everything going on during a play in live action and be able to break it down for the interested fan quickly. He spots the keys to just about every play and brings great observations to any game he commentates.
2. Ron Jaworski/Merrill Hoge – I think these guys do a great job breaking down games on ESPN’s NFL Matchup show. I love watching how they break apart film and show the critical details of each play to the average fan. It may be the show itself that I like here, but I find that these two guys are a good fit and deliver week in and week out.
3. Brian Billick – Exposure to the second tier of commentators is a bit limited to the games you see in your region, but I’ve seen a few games that Brian Billick has commentated and think he really does a good job. Sadly, “good” is better than most.
