Just because he doesn't have a lot of modern videos, never forget this classic rock pioneer who wielded a guitar with the same passion and vigor as the musicians he inspired, and he did it in a time when no one else was doing it. Revolutionary and gifted beyond anything the world had seen.

Because the man can hammer out an electric storm, or groove the acoustic guitar. He's passionate, controlled, and above all hella-talented.

M$Some are going to post talent, but any idiot can practice for hours upon hours and get good at playing. A truly great guitar player uses the instrument like no other. My list is for innovation.
1. Jeff Hanneman of Slayer.
2. Johnny Marr of The Smiths.
3. Greg Ginn of Black Flag.
4. Neil Young
5. Toni Iommi of Black Sabbath
6. Leadbelly
7. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and Metallica (not a huge fan he is just really talented, you try to sing and play those parts!)
8. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana (also not a huge fan, the dude sucked at playing and made a million dollars. That is a great guitar player to me. )
9. Tom Morello (RATM era, audio slave sucks hard.)
10. John Christ of Danzig.

1:12 is one of the greatest guitar parts ever created. The angel of death breakdown.

M$@kmcgrady, I'm glad you like Johnny Marr! I just remembered he worked with modest mouse and that is NOT, i repeat NOT, the era I was talking about. The Smiths only! Just to be clear.
Definitely agree with Johnny Marr and Leadbelly. Not sure what to think of Kurt Cobain though. I'm a huge Nirvana fan but I guess with him it depends how you look at the question. He inspired many people to play guitar and as you say he managed to write some great songs without great technique.
Thats what i meant by innovation over talent. Kurt played like no one ever could, as with the rest of my list. Look at Alice in Chains, they sound pretty similar but they were half as popular. Jerry Cantrell had double the experience and musical talent that Kurt had, but he just wasn't doing it like nirvana did. Its something that can't be taught and that's what makes the individual great.
If your cringing because of Kurt check out Greg Ginn, the man had no talent but he played what sounded good to him. Also made a name for himself.
I applaud the Hendrix theory! I think your the first I have heard say he is not a top ten guitar player based on talent and i agree. The man did play upside down guitars, and he sang it a wacky rhythm that is impossible for me to copy. Here's that word again INNOVATION! He is certainly in my top 15.
Thanks for the tip buddy!
That's a large part of the reasoning that Hendrix is still in my top ten. He's great, but is he really top ten great?? By ability alone, I'd probably say no. Not quite. But his legacy and fame have elevated him and caused him to be an enormous influence on so many others that he just can't be ignored.
lol at your Kurt Cobain reasoning. I was cringing before I read the details, and now I tip my hat to you and your logic.

M$@sunshine09 I'm not too sure how it sounded, I wasn't able to go. I think it's the full original line-up except him.
Richie Blackmore is a great choice, pity he isn't touring with Deep Purple anymore. They're played here a few days ago.
And he was not in the band? If not how did it sound?
Robert Fripp (King Crimson, session work, solo)
Stevie Ray Vaughan* - Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Hendrix Experience
Joe Satriani - Solo
Jeff Beck (The Yardbirds, Jeff Beck Group, session work, solo)

I didn't know that, goatead! Interesting!
Zappa rules! Did you know he was the first to have a "Parental Advisory" on an instrumental album? Hes the real rebel without a cause.
I know! i was shocked, Zappa, The guy from Twisted Sister, Ozzy, and Joey Ramone were the only ones to appear in court to argue with tipper gore when they were creating this idea. This is the real reason the album got the sticker, they claimed there was lewd imagery in the insert, but really there was just weird imagery.
Brilliant list! Can't believe I didn't include some of these guys in my own list.
