Who are some good published writers that I should read to help me with my own writing?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

"If you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time or the tools to write." Stephen King

The advice I hear from published authors on how to improve your writing and therefore to help you get published if that's your goal is to read, read, read. Not only to read, but to read everything in your genre you can get your hands on. Neil Gaiman and Stephen King are two that have said things along these lines. I also highly recommend Stephen King's book On Writing as a valuable resource of writing tips. Just don't get caught up in reading books about writing or you'll never get to writing!

So the short of it is to read, and to find the authors that have made a niche in your genre, learn from them and then do your own thing. The best thing for a writer to do is simply write!

The above link is some other tips for getting published. Have a great day and good luck with your writing!!!

You can start with reading the classic writers. Shakespeare, Dickens, Tolstoy, Twain, Frost are all good places to start. Now, if you know what kind of writing you want to do, you should focus on writers that have accomplished those tasks well. If you want to write mysteries, then Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King would make great authors. If you want to write westerns, Louis L’amour or James Michener might be the best for you. Consider your own future style or genre and determine which would work best for you.
Both King and Poe have written about writing itself. King’s On Writing would be most helpful. And Poe’s The Poetic Principle should help give you plenty of ideas as well.
Good luck with your work!
