Which would win in space combat, the Enterprise, or a Star Destroyer?

Would the Captain or other nonapparent factors make a difference?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well... firstly, they're both different.

The Star Destroyer has the ability to employ hundreds of TIE fighters, which, by themselves, would most likely be able to overwhelm the Enterprise.

The Enterprise has some pretty big guns - in ship-to-ship combat, the Enterprise may be able to punch a hole into the Star Destroyer.

Overall, however, I think that the Star Destroyer would win.

Not only is it much bigger, it has more weapons and much more advanced technology. If it sent all of its TIE fighters and bombers out to destroy the Enterprise, they would not only probably be able to destroy the ship itself, but also provide a great distraction.

And, looking at the bigger picture, there are hundreds of Star Destroyers and only one Enterprise. Realistically, the Star destroyers would just call for backup. And, if you haven't already noticed, they seem to always travel in small groups. At least two in most instances.

The Enterprise has better shielding, I think, but the average Star Destroyer can project gravity wells and possess tractor beams.

And how about the Star Destroyer itself? If it was the Super Star Destroyer, then it would most likely be able to ram the Enterprise and split it into pieces.

As for the Captain, Kirk is a lucky guy, a cool cat, but can he beat a fleet? Does he have the superhuman ability to choke, electrify, and move living and inanimate objects?

No, he doesn't.

Another advantage I think the Enterprise would have would be the ability to lock on, phasers or photon torpedoes, to its targets. I do not think this would defend against all TIE fighters.

Don't you think that Spock, and the Enterprise crew, would be able to find a Star Destroyer weakness to exploit? Also, the Enterprise has teleporters. They could, in theory, send a crew onto the Star Destroyer. If they were only met by Stormtroopers, I imagine they would be successful. If they met the Emperor, or Darth Vader, things would be quite different indeed.

Agreed. However, the Enterprise is the one and only, the one that is followed by the storyline and containing the Star Trek universe's finest. So, I would imagine, that if two of these would ever be engaged in combat, the Star Destroyer should probably have both the Emperor and Darth Vader on board.
