You should not forget the number one rule of thumb when choosing wine for the meat. This is the "red wine with red meat, white wine with white meat.". However, this is not always true but mostly it works if you are unsure.
One exception to this rule is when serving chicken. The chicken meat is white but a nice fruity red wine would go with it well. This is the same when serving tuna or salmon. These are exceptions that you have to keep in mind.
The second rule is to match sweet seafood like lobster with a sweet white wine. Outside of these basic rules are certain things that you have to avoid depending on what you are serving.
These are some tips on what particular food goes well with a particular wine:
1. Beef, Steak and Lamb goes well with dry red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon or burgundy like Pinot Noir. You also have the option to serve and Italian red like Barolo or Chianti.
2. Fish and seafood would go well with dry, crisp, white wine. Saugvignon Blanc goes well with white fish while Sancerre and Muscadet go well with oysters. You can also try a fruity red wine without tannins. Be cautious when serving red especially if you are serving white delicate fish.
3. Poultry, Pork, and Veal goes well with chardonnays and Pinot Blanc. If you want to serve red with chicken, remember to choose a wine that is fruity like Merlot or Zinfandel.
