As is the situation with most books-turned-movies, the book is way better than the movie. The ended of the movie is different from that of the book, actually, a little better, but the rest of the film does little to capture the love and passion of the book. In order to appreciate the magnitude of love and loss that the storyline is trying to convey, one needs to read the book.

Read the book AND saw the movie

I saw the movie first.... (well got dragged to see it first) and enjoyed it. As a movie it is certainly able to stand on its own 2 feet...

Anyway afterwards I bought a copy of the book for my wife, and managed to read the first couple of chapters before she got stuck into it.

The book is structured in a different way to the movie, using both characters as narrators and splits the stroy telling from both of their perspectives. There is also a huge amount of extra details and threads which didn't appear in the movie due to time reasons.

So the book is a bit like the HD version of the film....

Rumors are also floating round that ABC is going to do i as a series, with Friends creator Marta Kauffman tapped to be the show runner.

I'd watch the film first as it does work on its own, and then you'll get the pleasure of the book filling in the extra detail.

So all in all I think the order to do it would be
1) Film
2) Book
3) The tv series (if it happens)

It's always the book that is better than the movie.
In movies, they give you the character's appearances, the setting, etc.
It is the mind that creates the magic.
We imagine the characters and the setting. Sometimes vague, sometimes to the exact detail. What is fascinating is that we have our own virtual take on the book, and none of our thoughts are wrong.

Besides, if you see the movie first, you'll probably be so confused.
Take Twilight for example.
The movie ... blew chunks. Several bad actors, the plot was just one big jumble.
Luckly, I read the book first so I could criticize about the movie verison.
If you watch the movie first then go on reading the book, you will constantly say "Oohhh, so that's why!"
I suggest you read the book first and then watch the movie that will allow you to make references.
