Which type of music requires the least talent?

I would say most Country music because of the trite lyrics used over and over, but I know Hip Hop and Pop could be up there too. Maybe I'm getting old because it seems like there's a lot of junk out there. Which genre is the most mindless and why?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My vote goes to pop music. (As much as it pains me NOT to mock country music here! Ha!)

Modern pop music is littered with synthesized voices and cheap melodies that don't have any real soul to them. A lot of the lyrics are shallow and unintelligent. Everything just feels so...manufactured....in pop music. It all lacks the passion and soul and love that music is supposed to come from. Music from a giant publicity machine is like eating Pixy Stix and Pop Rocks for dinner. It just leaves you empty and pained inside.

A few prime examples:

"If U Seek Amy" by Britney Spears
(clever, huh? Wow, what else could that title possibly mean?? And while I'm at it: "Bimbosayswhat?")

"Shut Up" by Kelly Osbourne (inspired title refrain, don't ya think?)

....And this video speaks for itself.

I would probably have to say Pop music. Simply because most of them can't sing very well without all of the things they use in the recording studio to make them sound great, so instead them lip sync and dance horribly.

I don't know if its a genre but when a person reads/moans/talks to music, like William Shatner doing 'Convoy' or 'Rocketman'

I don't think this takes much 'talent' just bravery :)

I think Hip Hop and rap artists like Lupe Fiasco and Mos Def are really talented, but I have to say that artists like Soulja Boy have to be considered. I have never seen anyone with less talent.

Okay, here's a wiggly answer for you. Which talent are we referring to? Singing? Playing an instrument? I was tempted to say that "listening" requires the least amount of talent, but I don't think that's what you're looking for. Neither is Karoke, although we all know that it's seething with lack of talent! You're looking for genre. If it doesn't have to be contemporary, I think the folk songs popular in the 60s take the cake. Folk song performers, like some of Burl Ives and Harry Belafonte's songs, only needed to learn a maximum of 4 simple chords on the guitar. The vocals rarely spanned more than 1 octave. The chorus was always repeated in between verses, and the songs usually contained a maximum of about 3 verses. I learned the stuff when I was 10 and had been playing guitar for 2 months. It's not that it's bad music, it just required very little talent to reproduce it.

Karaoke!

Seriously, though, I'd have to say the proliferation of songs that are propped up only by AutoTune and a few Pro Tools synths. I know that you can use AutoTune for some decent effects, but more and more, it results in "vocalists" who are functionally indistinguishable from one another, and who can get away with lazy non-singing in the studio. And while I won't deny that there's some talent involved in putting together a backing track, the bar of entry isn't all that high. I made one in Fruity Loops in a few hours just playing around.
