Which TV character is the worst influence on today's children?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well since I am a little out of the loop as far as young children's shows are concerned, I can only speak for shows that older children watch....

1. South Park. I can not tell you how many times I have went into my now teenage sons room, and caught him watching it on TV. For an adult that understands boundaries it isn't a big deal, but for young adults that are learning the ways of society this is not a good influence.

2. Family Guy. I have to admit that I have watched, and it is a funny show. But not for young adults again...there are too many "implied" jokes that they shouldn't learn at such an impressionable age.

3. Every reality show...this is not what I would want my son doing to gain fame and fortune..." when i grow up I want to be on Tool Academy" or "The Real World 147, Hoboken NJ"

I hate to say it but TV is why kids at 13 know things that I didn't know until I was 16.

Well, since @veekay already mentioned Elmo I suppose I must go for the character that was second on my list.

Actually, there is a tie for second. The Geiko Gekko Lizard and the Bimbo Bread Bear.

The Geiko Gekko confuses me. Geckos are supposed to be native to Southeast Asia and Australia, yet this scaly creature speaks in an English Cockney accent. Those sort of head games must surely confuse children.

The Bimbo Bread Bear, if you are not Mexican you may not know him. He is the mascot for the Bimbo Group, one of the largest producers of baked goods in the world. Started here in Mexico, they are now all over Central and South America, the Hispanic market in the US and even in China. Yes, the bear has his paws everywhere. I do not think it is hygienic to have bears handling the baked breads that our children are putting into their mouths. So, the bear must go!

Bart Simpson is the worst influence on children. He is rude and makes it look cool to be an underachiever.

These guys

Teletubbies - argh!

What on earth were they thinking when they invented this moronic group of dumb things to entertain kids! A television for a stomach, oh great idea, let's get kids hooked on TV even more than they are now! And they are fat, let's face it. It was saying let's get bulky so I can be like a Teletubbie....sad!

The people on The Bachelor. Yes, all of them. Sure, you might argue that children aren't watching this show, but many of them probably are, or at least are exposed to media that's talking about the show.

What is it teaching people? That it's OK to set up a fake harem situation with a jerk of a guy, and that in order to win this jerk of a guy's affections -- surely the pinnacle of life achievement -- you have to act shallow. And on top of that, all of this is being exploited for ratings. Just look at the latest episode -- the finale with Tenley and Vienna was practically a textbook definition of the virgin/whore fallacy. A lot of reality shows in general are like this, but I must say that I'm not too pleased with the resurgence of this one.

Although my first instinct is to say Peter Griffin from Family Guy, I really don't think that many young children watch Family Guy, so instead I'm going to say Elmo. Elmo has become an obsession, and he seriously hypnotizes young children the moment he comes into view, whether its on TV, as a toy, or even as a picture on a book or DVD or box. Although he appears innocent enough, he's warping children's minds into becoming driven consumers, and he makes them stop caring about the world that goes on around them. Elmo needs to be stopped!

I am in absolute agreement with you. I know this "guy". A Russian, ex KGB, ex Soviet Special Forces, for 10K he can make the red muppet "go away"

I'm in for 5K. Who's with me? That red felt devil has to be stopped!
