Which to buy? iPod Touch or low-end iPad? (WiFi only)

Other than the size, is there any strategic advantage to an iPod touch over the low-end iPad or vice-versa? If my only connectivity were to be WiFi, is one of these any better than the other? Does either do GPS without a data plan, or does GPS require a data plan? I'm interested in the apps more than anything, and will not switch to AT&T for cell phone. I already have an unlimited data plan with a different provider at an extremely low price. Just considering getting an iPod touch so I can use apps like my friends, but with wi-fi, and wondering if I should get a low-end iPad instead, as it's not that much more expensive than a high-end iPod touch. But I'm afraid maybe that would be a mistake. I wouldn't be able to cram an iPad into my pocket for on-the-go usage.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Data plans are irrelevant to an iPod Touch or a wi-fi only iPad as neither can use phone networks.

To use phone networks you'd need an iPhone or an iPad that has both 3G and wi-fi connectivity. Even if you got an iPad with 3G, you most likely could not use your existing data plan with it. Even iPhone owners can't do that.

Whether you prefer an iPod Touch to an iPad otherwise depends on what you think you'll do with it. If you plan to mostly use it as a "couch computer" where you can surf and play games on the couch or read in bed then the bigger iPad screen will be nice. If you want something you can take with you most everywhere, the pocket-sized and much lighter iPod Touch is the way to go.

Also you might think about waiting to see what other tablets hit the market. For example the Dell Streak has a bigger screen than an iPod Touch, at 5" rather than 3.5", but is just about pocketable, and is much smaller and lighter than an iPad.

It really depends on your circumstances. If you need it to fit in your pocket, and want to save a little money go with the iPod Touch. If you have a little extra money and are willing to carry it around in a backpack then go with the iPad. The ipad is better for sufing the internet because of its larger screen, but it means you can't carry it in your pocket. ipod touch is more portable and a little cheaper. I personally would go with the iPad, because it's larger screen makes the internet easier to use and for me it would still be portable enough to carry around. But as I said it really depends on what you really want and the circumstances.
