I like to break down who I think were the best picks in the first couple rounds and then overall best drafts.
In the first round, I like all the draft picks in the NFC East. The Eagles got a impact pass rusher in Brandon Graham, at number 13. The Giants also got a big time pass rusher in Jason Pierre-Paul with the 15th pick. Washington bolstered their offensive line against the quick pass rushers in the division with Trent Williams from Oklahoma. Dallas got even better at wide receiver with Dez Bryant, just another weapon for Tony Romo. Gerald McCoy and Sam Bradford immedietly make Tampa Bay and St. Louis better for many years, barring injury.
One of the best picks in the second round could be the Patriots selection of TE Rob Gronkowski. He's had some injury issues which could be a concern but the guy is a legitimate TE and a real need for the Patriots. The Giants continue to upgrade their defensive line with their pick of Linval Joseph of East Carolina. Some may wonder about the inferior competition he faced compared to the top teams but he's a great run stopper and inside force. The Panthers selection of Jimmy Clausen from Notre Dame was great! The team was in desperate need of a QB and he fits well with them. Tampa Bay continued it's strong draft with selection of WR Arrelious Benn. He made many big plays in college and has good speed. Philadelphia was strong in the second round as well with much needed help at the safety position with the selection of Nate Allen from Florida State.
Top drafts in no particular order go to New York Giants, Carolina, Oakland and Tampa Bay
In addition to the strong first two picks, the Giants drafted punter Matt Dodge to replace the retired Jeff Feagles. They also got linebacker Phillip Dillard out of Nebraska with the 115th pick and a much needed safety in Chad Jones from LSU.
The Panthers added a few potential big time playmakers for Claussen with Armanti Edwards and Brandon LaFell out of Appalachian State and LSU. They also drafted QB Tony Pike out of Cincinnati who would backup Claussen and linebacker Eric Norwood.
Although I didn't rank the Radiers top two picks as among the best in the draft, overall every pick seems very solid and will help their team. Rolando McClain out of Alabama will help at LB. Lamarr Houston out of Texas should be a great NFL DT and runstopper. Bruce Campbell drafted out of Maryland is a huge, athletic fast OT. Jacoby Ford is a very fast wide receiver out of Clemson, who has the potential to be a big playmaker.
Tampa Bay gets a top grade just from their top two picks, who I feel will become stars in the NFL. They also did decent in the later rounds picking up Syracuse WR Mike Williams and Virginia Tech safety Cody Grimm.
