Which species of Tapir is the most endangered?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Of the four tapir species
  1. Lowland Tapir (Tapirus terrestris) is listed as vulnerable.
  2. Asian Tapir (Tapirus indicus) is endangered.
  3. Baird's Tapir (Tapirus bairdii) is endangered with an estimate for this species is < 5,000 mature individuals.
  4. Mountain Tapir (Tapirus pinchaque)is endangered with less than 2,500 mature individuals remaining

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Mountain Tapir is the most threatened of the four tapir species, classified as "Endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 1996.  Some scientists predict that the species could be extinct as early as 2014. There may be only 2,500 individuals left in the wild today, making it all the more difficult for scientists to study them. There are also very few individuals found in zoos. Only a handful of breeding pairs of this species exists in captivity in the world — at the Los Angeles Zoo, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, and, as of 2006, the San Francisco Zoo.
