Which religion has been most helpful, or least unhelpful, to society as a whole?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

For least unhelpful, the answer I generally here is Buddhism. This could be argued against, I'm sure, by someone who is concerned about souls being lost to whatever kind of bad place their religion offers to nonbelievers, but the thing about Buddhism is there is no "bad place," other than Earth, and there's really no persecution coming from it, either. It's pretty mellow.

Judaism is pretty good, but in the Old Testament the Hebrew people seem to do harsh things to others when they are instructed by God. Certainly, Judaism isn't causing harm in our modern times, but I think it still has in a wider perspective.

Tao and humanism are hard to argue with, especially since Wikipedia's entry on Tao says that Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism are all humanist religions. :)

Humanism. It has all of the goodwill and desire to foster unity and common good, and none of the archaic, vengeful deities. You'll never see a war waged in the name of Humanism.

We don't necessarily have to put an equal between religion and wars. You don't wage wars in the name of Taoism for example.

Hard to say.

It's tempting to say "none", but that is snarky.

I would have to say Judaism, which, ironically, is not even my own religion. It is responsible for the single greatest philosphy, I think, in the world-"do unto others as you would have them do unto you". I am taking into account Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict-while Israel is by no means innocent in those matters, their attitude is somewhat defensible.

Honest question - isn't the "Golden Rule" (do unto others...) a New Testament thing? That'd make it more a Christian thing.

Judaism. It was the first to foster the concept of monotheism, the idea of free will, equality, rights for women/children and even humane treatment of animals, a moral code, a legal structure etc...
