Which printers work with Mac OS 9?

I'm looking for a printer (currently available on the market) that will work with an old (1999) Apple iBook G3 running OS 9. Those iBooks had one USB 1.1 port.

I doubt that any current printer comes with drivers for OS 9. However, maybe someone knows which printer could be run using an OS 9 driver for an older model. Or maybe someone knows if and how I can connect a PostScript capable printer to that old iBook.

Background info: that iBook belongs to an 86-year old user who doesn't want to learn a new OS. But while the notebook still looks like new, the printer finally died for good.
Tip for best answer: M$5.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

From what I'm finding, the printers that people were using (or recommending to use) with Mac OS 9 are:

- Epson Stylus 740, Epson Stylus 88
- Lexmark E330, Lexmark E332n
- Xerox Phaser 4400, Xerox DocuPrint 240A, Xerox Phaser 3450
- Brother DCP 115C, Brother HL-2040, Brother HP-2070N, Brother MFC-5840CN, Brother DCP-540CN, Brother HL 2030, Brother HL5150, Brother HL5170
- HP CP1700, HP LaserJet 3800n, HP Color LaserJet 3800dn, HP 2300, HP LaserJet 5M, HP LaserJet 5N, HP DeskJet 870s, HP 1012, HP DeskJet 6540, HP DeskJet 6520, HP DeskJet 6840

I would love to look up each one for you and let you know if they're still being made (the forums in my sources range from 2004-2007), but I'm at work right now and I'm a little limited on where I can browse. Luckily computer forums are wide open for tech support help and whatnot, but shopping websites are kind of a no-no here. If I find any additional information when I get home, I will definitely leave a comment! I hope this at least helps you get pointed in the right direction.

You may also want to pass this along to your client (it's PC-oriented, but still valuable information, I think): http://www.doubleeagleservicesinc.com/whyupgrade.html

Thank you very much! Although the printers you have listed are older models and not available anymore, I found that a similar model of a cheap b/w laser printer, Brother HL-2035, is still available here (Switzerland) and it indeed comes with OS 9 drivers. I guess this is exactly what that gentleman needs.

Maybe I should have pointed out more clearly: the owner of the iBook is not a client of mine. He is a 86 years old gentleman writing his memoirs and he is definitely not willing to upgrade his PC and learn to use an new OS. That's why I'm looking for the simplest solution possible. Of course, I could try to use a PostScript printer or use a newer printer with an older driver, but if there is still a printer available that would work out of the box, that setup will last for another 5 years.

However, it's amazing in what perfect state that iBook is - after 10 years of use. Even the display backlight is still very bright. And to be honest: from booting until the word processor is ready to go, it takes just a couple of seconds... Much faster than a current OSX or Windows machine - from a subjective user's perspective.

Oh, I assumed he was your client - that was my mistake. :) Well, glad to be of help! That is quite amazing how well-preserved that iBook's in, and the boot time is surprising - I guess he really takes care of things he wants to keep for a long time. :)

If the client just wants to print black and white. I would get a networked black and white laser printer. Then use the Desktop Printer Utility in /Applications (Mac OS 9)/Utilites and set up printer as an LPR. Using this way you could use a generic driver and it would work just fine.

Not sure what price range the clients wants to keep it around. If they want color, try a HP network color printer, and use one of HPs older drivers. They tend to work fairly well with older drivers. Also you could get a regular inkjet printer and upgrade the router to one that supports usb printer sharing. Then use the above steps to set up the deskjet as network printer or LPR.

Thank you very much! I also thought of that network solution in case I wouldn't find a suitable printer. However, in this particular case (old person, no LAN), it is most important to leave everything as simple and unchanged as possible. I'm tending to get a b/w laser printer. If I can't find one that works, I will definitely try the other solutions.

HP deskjet 3820 and HP deskjet 5740 are OS 9 compatible.
Many Lexmark are also.

The HP printers mentioned are discontinued old models (2002) and not currently available.
