Its quite common for people to grow herbs on a window sill to use in cooking in pots no larger then a tea cup. (we do it all year round just to have a bit of fresh rosemary, thyme and basil handy while we cook)
I've seen everthing from cacti to maple trees grown out to mature plants in small pots.
You can grow a whole miniature garden if your so inclined.
