Which penpal website would you recommend?

I'm actually looking for advice from people who've actually used a penpal service. This is for a Taiwanese student of mine who is in senior high school.  Thanks!
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Wow, remove it from the dictionary? Man, I wouldn't go there quite yet, there are still a ton of people around the world who have penpals. I agree it wouldn't be a bad idea for them to maybe create a facebook account just to see if they can keep up...but then to have a penpal to actually work on their English at a reasonable pace and pick up on some of the more subtle aspects of American culture wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

Below is a link to a pretty good article reviewing some of the 'Net's more popular penpal sites...

The idea of a PENPAL is an outmoded idea popular in the 1970s and earlier. It is premised on the fact that it is difficult to meet people in exotic and far-flung places -- and helped people in various parts of the world connect -- and exchange addresses -- so that they could share interesting stories about other cultures.

TODAY however, PENPALs are hardly needed. It is easier than ever to connect to people across the world and exchange interesting information with the click of a mouse. Simply use FACEBOOK or other social networking sites to "join" or "become a fan of" various of your interests (say "sailing" or "chinese food" or "basket weaving" or "Learning Mandarin Chinese") -- and you will automatically be linked up with fans all across the world.

The word PENPAL should also be removed from the dictionary (except for historical purposes) as it no longer applies to anything in this computerized and networked day and age.

Thanks for readin'!

That's an interesting opinion, however there are a number of penpal websites which appear to have a lot of users. I'm interested to know which are the best ones.

You mentioned social networks - well penpal websites *are* essentially online social networks, ones which specialize in connecting people one-on-one. Joining a facebook group does not attain the same thing and my student will more than likely be ignored, especially as her first language is not English.

At least with a penpal website you can arrange to write a message or email once a week. There's a level of commitment on both sides that you don't get from joining a socnet group whose members may or may not want to talk to you on a regular basis.
