Which music bands were "one hit wonders?"

Which bands only released one big hit and then were never heard from again? Which artists are considered one-hit wonders? How many songs have to be sold to be classified as a hit?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There have been so many one hit wonders that it would be impossible to list them all here. A one hit wonder is a song that hits number one but the artist or band is either never heard from again or there songs never make the charts. Here is a decade by decade look at some of the more popular ones.

In the 1950s some one hit wonders included
Earth Angel- The Penguins
Happy, Happy Birthday Baby- The Tune Weavers
Purple People Eater- Sheb Wooley
He's Got The Whole World in His Hands- Laurie London

In the 1960s some one hit wonders included
Who Put the Bomp (In the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)- Barry Mann
Pretty Little Angel Eyes- Curtis Lee
Rhythm Of The Rain- The Cascades
They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Ha- Napolean XIV

In the 1970s some one hit wonders included
Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)- Edison Lighthouse
Spirit in the Sky- Norman Greenbaum
One Toke Over the Line- Brewer & Shipley
Dancing in the Moonlight- King Harvest

In the 1980s some one hit wonders included
Funkytown- Lipps, Inc.
Cars- Gary Numan
Turning Japanese- The Vapors
Mickey- Toni Basil

In the 1990s some one hit wonders included
I Touch Myself- The Divinyls
One More Try- Timmy T
I've Been Thinking About You- Londonbeat
Macarena- Los Del Rio

In the 2000s some one hit wonders included
Blue (Da Ba Dee)- Eiffel 65
Who Let The Dogs Out?- Baha Men
Wherever You Will Go- The Calling
Stacys Mom- Fountains of Wayne

All of these songs hit the charts but not all of them were number ones. They were just extremely popular at the time they came out. Once the novelty of the song died down, no more was heard from the artists after that.

A song becomes classified as a hit usually when it becomes very popular. A radio station might play a song and then get flooded with calls to play the song over and over again. They may consider it to be a hit song. But a song is not really an official hit, until it hits the record charts and begins to climb.

This website listed below has hundreds of songs and artists that were one hit wonders.
