Stay away from Tokay geckos - they are evil.
When I was a kid, I had a green anole. They are small and very quick when they are young (and probably pretty quick when they're older if not handled enough, but I played with mine everyday, so he was pretty docile). It took me a while to pick him up for the first time - I had to be quick but I didn't want to crush the little guy. Pretty cheap to care for since they are so small; 10 gallon tank was plenty of room, and he ate a bag of crickets every week or month, I don't remember, but it was cheap.
They told me he would only live 6 months to a year, but mine lived for just over 2 years. My dad picked me up from school one day and told me that Mac (the anole) wasn't doing too well and didn't look like he was going to hang on much longer. When I got home, I went over to pet him and see how he was doing, and he looked up at me and died a couple minutes later. My parents said he waited for me to get home to say good-bye. *a tear*

M$Well, I guess it depends how familiar you are with exotic pets. If this is your first lizard/gecko, you'll probably want to start off with one that is fairly easy to care for. Remember though that caring for exotic pets as a hobby can get expensive (lizards often need special lighting, tanks, and variable heating)!
Ok, for a beginner, here's what the experts suggest:
Leopard (I'll attach a pic if I remember) or crested or fat-tailed geckos
Bearded dragons
Blue-tongued skinks
Green anoles
Here's a great article from About.com that addresses various issues from choosing your lizard/gecko to caring for it:http://exoticpets.about.com/od/lizardsaspets/a/lizardspets.htm. They also provide links to pics and descriptions of the different lizards/geckos.
Have fun with your new pet!

Animals are amazing.
awww
Thanks, it's still sad when I think about it, and this was looong ago. I think it's amazing how animals and humans can form a bond, and I think all animals are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjWtRYaxmWMI'm sorry to go off on a tangent, but these kind of stories always make me think of Christian the lion. It's a story I always feel is worth sharing, so here it is...
If you've never seen it you should definitely watch it, and if you have seen it, you should watch it again.
