Which is the best site to host a free blog and why?

I would like to create a blog and am not sure why one site may be better than another, ie: Wordpress, Blogspot, SquareSpace, Vox, Blogger, etc...
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Blogspot (Blogger, they are the same) is a good place for a free blog. It is popular and there are a variety of themes to help you customize your blog. You can change the posting date for the past or the future which allows you to write blogs ahead of time and have them post on regularly scheduled intervals.

Wordpress is a decent place as well. It has a tremendous about of plugins to add functionality to your blog. Additionally, you can add a custom domain name so readers can reach you at www.myblog.com instead of myblog.wordpress.com, if you decide to buy one. It is also downloadable as software so if you have a domain name and hosting space you can add wordpress to that. Finally, many hosting companies such as GoDaddy have Wordpress built into it so the moment you buy your domain name and hosting space you can have wordpress ready to do.

Tumblr is terrific if you don't need a lot of functionality but want to be able to release posts on the fly. You can type them in or email them in. It isn't fancy but allows for custom domain names and with any knowledge of CSS you can create the look however you like. They also have existing post styles for text, audio, video, etc. The video post will allow you to paste a link from your YouTube video, for example, and embed that into the post. Due to its limited, quickfire nature though, video posts don't allow for a title which is louse for SEO or social media advertising - that means that using something like Tweetmeme will push a tweet out with most of the first sentence in the comments box of a video post since you can't use a title.

There are so many others. You mentioned a few above. Try them out and see what works for you. I believe that you'll find what you're looking for in one of the three I just mentioned. I use blogspot for my personal rants/musings. I used wordpress briefly but found it to be a little too robust for my purpose and have since moved it to Tumblr. There is value in each depending on your needs.

Blogger.com. I have been using blogger for a while and I am very happy about the way it works. Anyone can create and run a free blog with free hosting without any html knowledge. Though the layout is very simple, you can customize it if you have a little html knowledge. There are several useful widgets around the web which can be easily added to your blog. There are also several blogs specifically designed for blogger tutorials which will not let you down when you have problems.
