Well... if you really want to get into it... it was OS-9, and it's still too bad that it didn't form the core of all modern personal operating systems. It was so powerful and flexible with the way it could do everything on whatever resources were available.

But it was a valuable first lesson in terms of understanding how the world of computing tends to go, which is... always the marketplace will go for the lamest option.

Back in the early 80's the manufacturers had the option of using Intel or Motorola processors, and the Motorola was so much more well thought out, and so, what does IBM core their PC on? The Intel (Typical MBA thinking).

They had an option of building the first PC operating system from OS-9, or from CPM, and OS-9 was vastly superior, so the MBAs chose CPM which became DOS.

The marketplace had an option of favoring the Mac or the PC, and the Mac was vastly superior, yet the marketplace followed the droning of the MBAs and chose the PC even though it was buggier and harder to use.

When there were databases to settle on, there was Oracle, RDB, and Ingres. Ingres was by far the best, and Oracle was the worst, and so the MBAs chose Oracle and pushed that on humanity.

In terms of how to talk to a database, there was the SQL language, which was only useful when talking to a database meant typing on a keyboard through a command-line shell, such that to this day talking to an SQL database from a cgi is just faking out typing in some SQL commands from a keyboard (which is why it's so common for there to be problems "talking to" SQL-mediated databases when in fact there no real technical need for it... it's just a piece of evolutionary artifact like an appendix, and like an appendix, it can break), and then there was DB2, which was vastly superior if being used as an embedded database system, so the MBAs chose SQL, and the marketplace, not knowing anything about what they were being sold, bought it.

(Free markets only work when the buyers know what they're buying... they can pick out a good tomato, but when it comes to things they don't understand, like cars and computers, they become totally vulnerable to snake-oiling).

It goes on and on.

We're basically fifteen years behind where we could have been, and if you extrapolate what 15 years means in terms of the growth of computer technology, it means HAL-9000's by now if it had not been for the MBAs and their control of advertising and the way 82% of people actually listen to advertising (I don't, but I know others do, and it's frankly weird to stand back and watch it affect them).

But it always made me wonder why the MBAs systematically always chose the lamest option, and as far as I can tell, it's that when they would be doing their technical reviews to decide which technology to invest in, they noticed that smart technologists would support a good technology, whereas the dumb technicians would support the lamer technology, and I suspect that the smart technologists also had integrity, and refused to brown-nose the MBAs who wanted to be treated like they were worthy humans for no other reason than because they could swing an economic club like they were still cavemen, instead of being able to achieve respect via things like intelligence, creativity, and humanity.

Either that, or the MBAs, being incapable of understanding the mentality of those who are motivated by truth, beauty, and logic, couldn't understand that the smart technologists were no more a threat than Spock was to the captaincy of the Enterprise, but unlike Kirk , which could see that, the MBAs are like paranoid Klingon/Romulins who think that anyone with more intelligence than themselves would do what they would do if they had the smarts, which is be a threat, and therefore must be avoided and/or suppressed, and so we've been held back in technology by MBAs fearing that everyone has the same capitalistic motivations as themselves and so would only invest in, and advertise, technologies that were conceived and maintained by the B-grade technicians whom the MBAs did not feel to be a threat.

Hmm... it's like... health recognizes sickness, but sickness does not recognize health.

In any case... my favorite little personal operating system was OS-9, but these days, it's a tie between Debian and openBSD.

OpenBSD is the only Unix to have undergone a line-by-line security audit via funding from DARPA, and so it is the most secure, but it's also the most stable, because in fact, most buffer-overflow conditions that can be used as a security hole just crash the machine, so in the process of securing the OS they also incidentally made it more stable, so I use that for all professional/commercial-grade applications that have to be B2-C2 grade security, and for personal... it's the Debian version of Linux because they've done the best job of minimizing the thinking I have to do about maintaining dependency layers so I can get back to playing.

Hey 'omicron' you seem to really resent MBA's (Masters of Business Administration) Just wondered you reason?

Also in your interesting answer you say "Well... if you really want to get into it... it was OS-9, and it's still too bad that it didn't form the core of all modern personal operating systems. It was so powerful and flexible with the way it could do everything on whatever resources were available."
Do you have any evidence to back up that statement?
And
"always the marketplace will go for the lamest option. "
From what figures are you quoting?
And
"Back in the early 80's the manufacturers had the option of using Intel or Motorola processors, and the Motorola was so much more well thought out, and so, what does IBM core their PC on? The Intel (Typical MBA thinking)."
Your reasons\proofs for that statement?
And
"They had an option of building the first PC operating system from OS-9, or from CPM, and OS-9 was vastly superior, so the MBAs chose CPM which became DOS."
Your facts and figures, and do you know what the 'spec' for an o\s were from IBM? And WHY they chose Q\DOS-MS\DOS?
And
"The marketplace had an option of favoring the Mac or the PC, and the Mac was vastly superior, yet the marketplace followed the droning of the MBAs and chose the PC even though it was buggier and harder to use"
Again proofs!?
You go on to say "and then there was DB2, which was vastly superior if being used as an embedded database system, so the MBAs chose SQL, and the marketplace, not knowing anything about what they were being sold, bought it."
You are making it sound as if it was (only) MBA's that, a\ made all the decisions, b\had some ulterior motive to deny the public of a better product

And (last one for now)
"what 15 years means in terms of the growth of computer technology, it means HAL-9000's by now if it had not been for the MBAs and their control of advertising"
Your EVIDENCE for such a statement "MBAs and their control of advertising" also "the MBAs systematically always chose the lamest option"
And do you honestly think that, if not for your accusations, a computer capable of speech, speech recognition, facial recognition, natural language processing, lip reading, art appreciation, interpreting emotions, expressing emotions, and reasoning, would be a functioning entity now?

I could go on, further questioning your facts(?) and asking for 'proofs' of your statements, but suffice to say, I think all that you have to say is conjecture and should be presented as so!

I haven't tried too many OS but based on the ones I've used over the years (Free: Ubuntu, Fedora Linux; Microsoft: Win 95, Win 98, Win ME, Win XP, Vista, Win 7), what I like most is Windows 7.

I know compared to the free ones, you could save a lot but purchased OS are usually more user-friendly than the free ones. I have nothing against them, but if you have the money, then why not get Win 7?

Aside from it looks great, if you've been on XP or Vista (I still didn't get why Vista ever existed, lol) you'll notice the speed. It has better support than Vista too. So if you're currently using Vista, upgrading to Windows 7 is a good idea.

If you have a couple of computers/laptops at home, networking and file sharing is also good in Win 7.

Of course in the end, it's still depends on the person which OS works better for him/her. I also haven't tried other OS yet... I had tried using Mac several times but I haven't owned one so I can't compare it with Win 7 yet.

That's a very loaded question. All have different features, look different, work in different ways, and offer different compatibility. I believe which one is "best" ultimately depends on personal taste and what you're used to using.

Personally, I enjoy Ubuntu (one of the main Linux distributions) because it's easy, it works well, and - the main perk for me - it's free. You can read more about Ubuntu here: http://www.ubuntu.com/

I have used Windows, *Linux, *BSD and finally Mac OS (which is another BSD-like internally) and I have to say that after being a fan of Linux for so many years I'm married with my Mac OS X now. The integration, the design, the culture, everything around Macs is so absorbing and works so well that I don't want to go back to Linux again.

Lynix... Everything is free, easy, user friendly, and there will not be any viruses trying to get in your computer. I have and use Ubuntu 8.04, but i hear Ubuntu 9.10 is really good. Best of luck. My opinions: Mac is better than Windows but less people will know how to use it if you need help a lot. Also, Mac has less virus vulnerability. Many of Window's O.S.s have too much pre-installed, useless programs that will run in the background and greatly slow down your computer.

BeOS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeOS
Greatest potential operating system of all time. It was based around multimedia creation, so it was able to do what computers now struggle with back in 1991! They were very forward looking developers, but were bought out by Palm and discontinued.
Thankfully open source guys have created something similar in spirit called Haiku

The best personal computer operating system of all time was CP/M - Control Program for Microcomputers. It was one of the most successful operating systems written by Gary Kildall of Digital Research and set the standard for those coming forward.

IBM approached Microsoft about the state of home computers and Microsoft products and needed an operating system for their new IBM PC.

Since Microsoft had never written an operating system, they suggested talking with Gary Kildall of Digital Research. Somehow IBM and Digital Research could not come to terms about signing an IBM non-disclosure agreement. As a result, IBM went back to Microsoft and gave them the contract to write the operating system for them.

The MS DOS operating system was based on a system written by TIm Paterson of Seattle Computer Products called QDOS - Quick and Dirty Operating System. Paterson purchased a CP/M manual and used it as the basis for writing QDOS. Somehow QDOS was considered different enough from CP/M to be legal. Hmmm...

Microsoft bought the rights to QDOS for ~$50,000 and Microsoft (Bill Gates) then convinced IBM to let Microsoft retain the rights to market MS DOS separate from the IBM PC. The rest is history -- or guess I should say "marketing".

So, the best operating system handsdown was CP/M. But, the best marketed system was MS DOS better known as QDOS - that Quick and "Dirty" Operating System that set the stage for all our frustrations for many years.

What was it that made it the best? why is it better than... say windows XP?

Hi psionandy,

That os made it very easy and intuitive for the user. If this os had set the stage, we probably would have never heard the term "just reboot" or "you have to reload your software".

While considering operating system it is of two type
open source code eg. linux
Non open source code eg. windows
Windows are mostly used operating system in which users mostly like to use is windows xp due to following reason
-Easy to handle
-less ram require due to less graphics
-suitable for all types of system
-Software's can be easily install even pirated

But great draw back is the most of the virus programs are written for windows

At the mean time in linux since it is open source code it is easy to handel and virus cannot attack the os since all virus programs are based on windows os

Well all you have to do is ask the shareholders!

The answer is going to be Microsoft Windows!

No other operating system is as widely used, has had so much development, has been used in so many diverse environments (and well), has had so much third party software written expressly to suit it, has been so easy to recognise, is so easy to use, has made its owners\developers\shareholders as much money and become such a household 'word' as 'Windows'!

Whether another o\s may be able to do some of the tasks performed by windows better (and they do) is not in dispute, but as an all rounder NO other o\s can compare!
Windows is THE most successful therefore 'best'

From dictionarydotcom
–adjective, superl. of good with better as compar.
1. of the highest quality, excellence, or standing: the best work; the best students.
2. most advantageous, suitable, or desirable: the best way.
3. largest; most: the best part of a day.
–adverb, superl. of well with better as compar.
4. most excellently or suitably; with most advantage or success: an opera role that best suits her voice.
5. in or to the highest degree; most fully (usually used in combination): best-suited; best-known; best-loved.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/best

And no, I dont work for Microsoft :-)
