Hello, @nastalam.
While people call any sparkling wine Champagne, by EU law, only wine produced in the Champagne region of France can be called “Champagne.” The area in northeast France, 100 miles from Paris, produces the world’s premier sparkling wine. This area covers 76,000 acres) of vineyards around 319 villages.
Determining the “best” champagne is a matter of taste, and wine experts tend to frequently disagree about who deserves the top spots.
According to Novus Vinum 2006 list, the three top prestige vintages are:
Gosset1998 Célébris, $125
Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle, $110
Louis Roederer1999 Cristal, $220 &1999 Cristal Rosé, $400

If those are out of your price range, About.com’s weddings guide Nina Callaway recommends three sparkling wines under $20.
Roederer Estate Brut, Anderson Valley,
Mumm Napa Brut Prestige, Napa Valley, $16
Non Vintage Barefoot Bubbly California Premium Extra Dry, $9
