Which is better Yi Jianlian of the New Jersey Nets or Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets?

The NBA has its own version of Great Wall of China in 7-6 Yao Ming of Houston Rockets and 7 foot Yi Jianlian of the New Jersey Nets. These two behemoths are indeed slumbering giants and truly made an impact t their own respective teams and to the league as well. Their wingspan is enormous and when stretch to the fullest can cover any offensive player’s good looks and in turn may force hem to force their shots. They have very good all around ball handling skills which is too good for their sheer size and ample enough basketball IQ to compete with anybody else on the court.
These two great mastodons are truly remarkable and whom do you think is better player of the two pride of Chinese Basketball Empire.

Yi Jianlian has just started his NBA career and has great potential to be one of the best Chinese players to enter the NBA. It is entirely dependent upon his coach if his team will be built around him to support his offense and be the player to depend on in crunch time. Yao Ming has been a very effective starting center for the Rockets but his serious injury may change his playing style when he returns to the NBA after full recovery. Only a handful of players have returned to be dependable players again after a career threatening injury and I hope Yao Ming will be one of them. If Yao's return will be successful, he may be the best Chinese player to enter the NBA but if his injury affects his play, I think Yi Jianlian will have a good chance to prove that he is the best.

At the present time, I don’t think it’s really much of a race between the two players. Of course it could become a pretty good horse race of Yao Ming doesn’t come back at full strength from an injury that saw him miss the entire 2009-10 season. Still at the present time, Ming is clearly the better player of the two. Having said that, it appears that Yi Jianlian is not that far behind Ming, and has definitely been improving a little bit every season.

Ming has also been around quite a bit longer than Jianlian and in his rookie season Ming was hardly all that great a center, but in his fourth season he finally turned into the complete package, averaging over 20 points a game, and hauling down 10.2 rebounds per game. Jianlian put up numbers that were pretty unimpressive in his first two years, but last season he scored just over 12 points a game and hauled down seven rebounds. If he continues to progress and improve and if Ming is not 100 percent their talent levels may get closer, but right now it’s Ming by a long shot.

Yi Jianlian just completed his third season in the NBA and has improved since his rookie season. He appears to have a large upside if he continues to work hard and progress. Last season he aveaged 12 points per game, 7 rebounds per game in 32 minutes per game. That was up from 9 points and 5 rebounds per game in 2008 - 2009. One disturbing statistic is his field goal percentage. He shot just 40.3% last season and 38.2% the season before. At his size, 7' 6", he should be more effective down low and increase that percentage above 50%.

As for Yao Ming, he will be 30 in September and had already had a very good NBA career. He has had a few injury problems and will be interesting to see how he bounces back from an injury that cause him to miss all of this past season. For his career, Ming has averaged 19 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks per game. He has shot 53.2% from the floor and 83.2% from the line, very impressive for a center. He obviously right now is far superior to Jianlian. Even in his rookie season he far out performed what Jianlian has at any time during his career. I doubt Jianlian will ever match the numbers that Yao Ming has put up regardless of what happens the rest of Yao Ming's career.
