Now, which platform has the best 'action' and 'sports' exclusives?
For 'sports' the answer is easiest: None. Almost all good sports games are created by EA, and these include 2010 FIFA World Cup, FIFA Soccer, Madden NFL 11, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR, NHL 10, NCAA Football 11, NBA LIVE, Grand Slam Tennis and Fight Night. Any and all of these sports titles are available on both xbox 360 AND the Playstation 3, and these are the best sports games around.
There is one sports game exclusive for Playstation 3, which is Gran Turismo 5, which is due out later this year (probably), one of the most eagerly awaited exclusives there. The xbox 360 has the 'Forza' games, Forza Motorsport 2, Forza Motorsport 3 and Full Auto and RACE Pro.
As for "Action", that category is a bit vague, and it really depends on what you consider to fit in that category. Some will say the xbox 360 Gears of War series is an action game, some will call it a third person shooter. The same applies with the Halo series, a first person shooter, that sometimes is called an action game. Third example is
There is no discussion about these action exclusives:
Xbox 360:
Fable 2, Fable 3
Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2
Playstation 3:
Uncharted, Uncharted 2
INfamous
God of War Collection (Part 1 and 2), God of War 3
There are probably more, but these are the main ones out there
As you can see, it's a pretty balanced story, and it really depends on what type of game you like most. As said, you won't make a bad choice with either one of these consoles, as there are hundreds of really good games on either platform. The differences are in the details.
You might want to look at other details like blu-ray, cost, reliability, on-line play, etc. helping you with making your decision, in this answer, I focused purely on you action and sports games, as you indicated.
I hope this answer helps you along in your decision. If you require more information, don't hesitate to ask, and I'll try to answer it further.

I did not mention the library as many games are cross platform and those that are unique may have individual tastes play in. For example I enjoy things like Disgaea 3 more than Halo, but I would argue most people would reverse that. . . besides, Mith did a fantastic job of comparing Sports & Action titles for you.

M$It's not a secret why Wii has been the undisputed champion in the video games sales department for the past three years or so. If you're not that young, you might agree with me that Wii has been the greatest invention in gaming history since Duck Hunt. (Nintendo Entertainment System's Duck Hunt popularized the light gun shooter in the video gaming arena.)
I think it is time to retire video games that make people even more sedentary. Nintendo has just released MotionPlus, and Sony will release Playstation Move in a few months, but are they really vast improvements over the Wii?
XBox 360 promises to make the body the only controller! Xbox 360 Project Natal will allow for ultra realistic gaming, which is exactly what Wii Motion Plus was designed for. Wii's Balance Board was also a desperate attempt to make gaming more realistic. Natal on 3 D TV or with a 3D mask add-on will probably follow, and the Natal will define gaming for many years to come. In other words, it will be virtual reality gaming on steroids. It's obvious why Wii has been outselling the other two, and it will be obvious why Natal will be outselling them before its patents expire.
Some argue that they need something to hold on too. I agree that the human hands like to hold on to something. (I think that's why the multi-touch tablets like the iPad are selling well.) But with Xbox 360 Project Natal, you'll be able to hold anything, like real baseball bats for Xbox360 baseball games and real swords for sword-fighting games! And you can make your avatar jump and kick more realistically.
Complex gesture recognition, facial recognition, and voice recognition will converge in the futuristic technology. Some think the $200 estimated price for Natal is too much, but I don't agree. Wii introduced Video Gaming into Fitness, Sports, and Health, and I think Natal will introduce Video Gaming into more fields, like Education, Science, and Pornography!
I've never owned a console in my life. As a child, I was contented to watch some selfish peers play it. I'm still not rich, but will I buy Xbox 360 Natal? Absolutely, I think it will be a great investment. I was pretty surprised why it's supposed to be just $200.
I have no idea about Xbox 360 or PS3 games, but my vote goes to Xbox 360. The product of Project Natal, whatever it will be called, will be released later this year.

M$Project Natal also includes an advanced version of the Eye Toy. Natal eyes can see you in limited lighting conditions and distinguish you from other individuals.
I think you gotta see the video to see Project Natal at work. I don't think it has any real competitor! I'd bet all my money on this futuristic console. In a sense, the goal of gaming is to mimic reality and give you dispensible lives. In my opinion, Natal is really a huge step to the perfect console. Maybe something's wrong with my mind?
I think it just needs to be marketed better than the Wii. The Wii has been marketed well, but a lot of people still don't know what it is. If Project Natal isn't recognized as a bigger game changer, I think it will be because of lack of publicity.
But I think people should get to know the Project Natal. It's not just an add-on. Microsoft made it an add-on in a desperate attempt to make the Xbox 360 compete with the Wii, which we know has been a failure. The Xbox 360 is staying mediocre until Project Natal launches.
More and more people are tied to their desks. At the end of the day after hours sitting in front of your computer, will you still want to be sitting down more to play video games if you have a chance to move about freely while playing video games?
Personally, I'll love to have full control of my avatar, and this is what Project Natal will provide. You become the controller itself. And I can really see how the project will be valuable to those that aim to live longer.
I'd like to add a spin-off question:
$400 Xbox 360 with Project Natal or $400 iPad?
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/consumer-electronics/500-ipad-or-400-xbox-360-with-project-natal
Did you ever play with the eye toy? It is really fun.
The reason Wii's motion controls are popular is that they are packaged with the system, thus developers are motivated to produce great games for it.
Until some great games are announced for Natal it is a very expensive novelty item. It reminds me of the Eye Toy (which was very fun, but had a few good games) and the power glove (which was only OK and totally floundered for support)
If it makes you feel any better I am equally skeptical of PS3's announced motion control.
I forgot to answer your follow-up question...Which has the best action games and the best sports games. Which do you think is better?
I think Xbox 360 Natal will absolutely offer the best action and sports games, because with your whole body as the controller, you will be least limited in movement. It will also be very ergonomic. It will feel so natural.
I can't really believe Project Natal includes voice and face recognition. I can't wait to get the first ever console in my life, and I hope Mahalo Store sells it at a discount!
http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/news-features/news/Project-Natal-in-detail-050609.htm
The only bad thing about it is that developers didn't embrace it, if you have a PS2 pick one up, the selection of games is limited but it is a BLAST to play.
http://www.amazon.com/Eye-Toy-Play-2-Camera-Playstation/dp/B0009RG88M/ref=pd_sim_vg_4 and for the price you can't go wrong
Thanks^^ But seriously, the Xbox 360 will be the first console in my life, all because of Project Natal^^
I think Natal's eyes have better resolution and sensitivity than the Eye Toy, but I agree with you that the Eye Toy must be an excellent add-on to PS2.
Another thing I forgot about the project is that Xbox 360 can actually let you surf the internet. I know the Wii does, and I just confirmed that the Xbox 360 does too.
What do you think about internet browsing with Project Natal?
I feel weird to vandalize this page about Natal and say nothing about PS3 vs. Xbox 360 core, but I really don't know anything about consoles. I just don't think it matters if PS3 is better than Xbox 360 right now, because I expect the fruit of Natal to shock the world.
I never did. I only learned of its existence last week. It sounds like a real fun toy. I read about it while reading on Project Natal, which I'm obviously crazy about!
For my opinion:
Originally, the Xbox 360 was my system of choice due to Achievements and Xbox Live. The PS3 has grown on me since over the years, mostly due to some really awesome exclusive content (God of War, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, and Demon Souls).
Some Xbox 360 Strengths:
- Cheaper Bundles
- Has Xbox Live Support with *some* exclusive content
- Various exclusive franchises like Halo, Forza, and Fable
- Project Natal
- Blu-Ray built in
- Wireless built in
- Free Online Service with *some* exclusive content
- Various exclusive franchises like Metal Gear, Rachet & Clank, Gran Turismo, God of War, & Uncharted
- Upcoming "Playstation Move"
Both systems have very good Media Extension ability (like streaming Netflix, streaming form your computer, etc).
The honest answer really should be that neither is "better" but instead
which is better for you. The best way to find that out is to demo each through friends, at your local Video Game store, etc. Content is really key on both of these systems and really is what will make you love or hate the systems individually.

M$The PS3 has the Blu-ray so you can use it as a pretty decent DVD player, where-as the XBOX 360 has the better online experience.
Perhaps you should approach the question from a different angle - what will the future hold for the two consoles?
Microsoft are introducing Project Natal which promises to revolutionize the whole industry with a camera and microphone that removes the need for a controller and makes the whole process far more interactive than even the Wii can boast.
Sony will be brining out their wand so they will have a Wii like experience and there is a potential for the PSEye to do the same thing as Project Natal. Sony also seem to be forging alliances that may lead to a far more 'superior' experience with the likes of Google.
Also, what about Nintendo? They are not going to simply stand by and watch Microsoft and Sony regain the dominance they once had - I guarantee we'll see something new from them in the near future - that may make the choice easier for you...Wii HD - with no controller perhaps?
If I were you, I'd hold out until October or November and see what is available then!

but the games on the ps3 is better than that of wii... ok. I'll go with PS3.

M$The 360 has more console specific games than the PS3 and used game prices tend to be cheaper than PS3 prices. Also there are normally more copies of 360 games around second hand.
I have both the PS3 and 360, although I like my PS3 I have found that the 360 has more choice of games at generally lower prices.

M$Short answer: XBOX 360.
Long answer: Price, performance, visual quality, game selection and online support. I think the XBOX 360 wins in every category.
Price: This is obvious; the XBOX 360 core is only $299. The PS3 is around $499 for the 20GB version. It comes with a hard drive, but you don't need a hard drive to enjoy a lot of great games on the 360 so I think it's fair to compare both core systems.
Performance: On paper, the PS3 is more powerful. In reality, it's quite inferior to the 360. Without getting into too many details, the three general-purpose CPU's the xbox360 has are currently FAR easier to take advantage of than the SPU's on the PS3. I suspect a few years down the road some high budget, first party PS3 exclusive titles will come out that really take advantage of the SPU's and do things the XBOX 360 can't, but I don't think the console is worth buying based on this speculation (for some it will be though, we'll have to wait and see how these games turn out).
Graphics: The XBOX 360 is a clear winner. The GPU is more powerful. It has more powerful fillrate, and far more pixel and vertex processing horsepower. Part of the reason is their choice of memory, and architecture of pixel and vertex procesing. I can't get into details but the same vertex shader will run much slower on the PS3 than the XBOX 360. The 360 also has a clever new way rendering high definition anti aliased back buffers. To accomplish the same effect on PS3 is prohibitively expensive. For this reason I think many games will have no choice but to run in non-HD resolutions on the PS3 version, use a lower quality anti aliasing technique, or do back buffer upscaling. The end result in all cases is going to be noticeably worse image quality.
Game Selection: The XBOX 360 has a huge head start here. 1 year is an eternity in gaming. Almost all multi-platform developers have made the XBOX 360 their primary platform due to timing of release-to-market, this means the games will look and perform better on the 360. The PS3 versions will be ports of the 360 versions. (The opposite was true for XBOX 1 vs. PS2). The XBOX 360 is also far faster to develop for due to better development tools (massively popular Visual Studio .NET vs. proprietary, buggy PS3 compiler and debugger), better documentation, and easier architecture (3 general purpose CPU's vs. 8 specialized processors that require DMA). Timing has also caused all next-gen middleware developers to make XBOX 360 their primary platform, and they will 'add ps3 support' as needed. This support will probably be inferior to the XBOX 360's due to manpower and more importantly, demand. It's this catch-22 now that will continue to drive the 360 forward and hold PS3 back.
The other obvious point here is that right now the Xbox360 already has a very impressive line-up of titles on store shelves; the ps3 just launched, and has virtually nothing of interest. Also, many 360 games are already discounted. PS3 games are all full price since it just launched.
Live: Microsoft's online support with XBOX1 was phenomenal. They built in-house experience, user base, facilities, $$ commitment from executive level (since it proved successful), and most importantly, feedback from 100,000s of XBOX Live subscribers. Playstation 2's online support sucked. They are now playing catch-up, trying to emulate Xbox's model. But they had their hands tied just trying to make the PS3 work, it was incredibly ambitious (blu-ray etc.). I haven't seen it yet, but I seriously doubt the quality will be anywhere to the level of XBOX 360.
HD Content: The PS3 comes with one built in (blu-ray). The XBOX 360 offers HD-DVD as an add-on for $200. You probably don't care about HD-DVD right now. But you will soon (The quality between DVD and HD is comparable to VHS vs DVD, if you have the right TV) so I suggest paying attention to the war that's begun. There are two formats: HD-DVD and BLU-RAY. Basically if you rent a BLU-RAY DVD from Bockbuster, it won't play in your XBOX 360 HD-DVD, and vice versa with the PS3. The implications of this format war would require another article on its own. But as far as the consoles are concerned, the XBOX 360 wins because the DVD player is a separate unit. Playing movies is very taxing on the DVD reader, and let's face it. In 3 years when your PS3 DVD drive goes out due to playing lots of movies (PS2 was notoriously bad about this) you will have to go buy another PS3. With the 360, you'll just chuck your HD-DVD player, and go buy another one at the store. In 3 years standalone units wlil probably only cost about $99-150. Another point for the XBOX 360, is that I don't know who will win the format-war, so I would rather wait with purchase of a HD player. The PS3 doesn't give you this option.
PS3 controversy: Shootings, Wallmart fights, $15,000 Ebay sales etc. My advice is ignore it. It will pass soon.
Gud luck

M$Your answer is a direct copy-paste from a 2007 article.
#1 Copy-pasting entire answers is not allowed on Mahalo. Your answer has to be unique, and your own.
#2 2007-2010 is a LONG time, making your answer completely ridiculous. Many of the arguments (and prices!) in your answer are no longer valid: You're basically giving mis-information here.
#3 your answer mentions HD_DVD as a viable HD source, and "the war that's begun". We all know now that the "war" has been fought, and HD-DVD lost. HD-DVD is now obsolete.
anyone who reads this, and knows anthing about technology obviously will know that this is by far outdated ( especially the HD-DVD stuff). It is defiantley copyand pasted because this comment makes no sense in 2010 terms. You should try actually legitimately answering questions.
1. Utility: If you want to use your Ps3 or Xbox 360 for both gaming and media purposes, then go with the PS3. It has a Blu-Ray drive and the built-in WiFi makes streaming media easy. By buying the PS3 you are also entering the world of high definition Blu-Ray movies, which can otherwise be a bit costly. It's not just media, the PS3 also has great games with beautiful visuals.
2. Price: The XBox 360's lowest model is pretty cheap at around $200. If you are looking forward to buying a console just for gaming, you can consider the Core but beware - the Core does not have any wireless controllers or hard drive.
If you want a PS3, you will need to shell out around $400. But with the features the PS3 has in store for you, the price is justified.
UPDATE: After a price drop, both the consoles are at par. The new PS3 Slim and XBox 360 Elite both go for $299. While the lower end 360 sells for $200.
3. Exclusive Games : Most of the games are multi-platform games, that is they are released on both the consoles but there are certain titles that are exclusive to each console. That means you cannot get an exclusive for the PS3 to play on the 360 and vice-versa. Most of the exclusives are among the best games made.
> PS3 Exclusives: Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, MotorStorm 2, Killzone 2, inFamous ..
> XBox 360 Exclusives: Halo 3, Ninja Gaiden II, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction ..
So if you are an FPS lover, the 360 can be good as it has a lot of shooter games. The PS3 has a wide variety of games from different genres. A pretty good example of this can be LittleBigPlanet. This game is really cool and creative and requires you to make full use of your imagination. People tend to love it.
4. Online Play: If you are looking forward to playing your games online, then the 360 will be better as it's online play is better than the one on the PS3. For the Xbox Live service, you'll need to pay some amount whereas the PSN (PlayStation Network) will be free.
5. Support: Both Sony and Microsoft are providing good support to their respective consoles and the 360 and PS3 are getting great titles at the moment.
