In terms of the handhelds, I'm going to have to go with Platinum, the latest version for the Nintendo DS. The graphics are phenomenal, and it has an extended storyline, longer than both Diamond and Pearl versions. It's better than all the other games in every way. Although personally, I do not care for Pokemon as much as I once did. Im 17 yrs old now. This is why I enjoyed FireRed and LeafGreen. It was like a trip into the past for me and many of my friends. Luckily they are remaking Gold and Silver versions as well!
As for the bigger and better video game consoles, I'm going to have to go with Pokemon Stadium for the Nintendo 64. It was a great game, and I can recall countless hours spent trying to beat the Elite Four and other leaders. Pokemon Stadium 2 was eventually introduced, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one.
I know they have a new game similar to Pokemon Stadium. It came out a few months ago for the Wii. I believe it is Pokemon Battle Revolution. However, it is very childish, it doesn't follow any specific storyline, and you get tired of it after a while. It does not compare to Pokemon Stadium.
In conclusion, I believe Pokemon Stadium is the best game ever. But in terms of graphics, capability, and all the other things that children care about nowadays, the greatest games are Platinum version for the DS and Battle Revolution for the Wii.
I hope I helped; have a great day!!!

M$I agree with the above poster regarding Pokemon Stadium for the Nintendo 64. It was a very good game at it's time, and Pokemon Stadium 2 was just as good. The new games, however, just don't cut it.
Best currently available game? Try Fire Red for it's closeness to the original Pokemon. 150 pokemon to catch, instead of well over 300 from the newer games. It's a little more authentic.
