Which is a better option Net book or a notebook?

I am looking to buy a new laptop but my financial condition is not good. So do you advice Netbook as an alternative. What are the limitations of a netbook.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It depends on type of usage. For basic day to day word processing and lots of cloud applications (e.g. Google docs etc) netbook is sufficient. It can also cope with basic image editing (using IrfanView to resize image not Adobe Photoshop to batch convert or layers editing). Video editing would also struggle in netbooks.

The other limitations are
- Screen (the latest 10 inches screen netbooks are a bit better with 1024 x 768 resolution). You can always connect it to the bigger external screen up to certain screen resolution).
- Keyboard - similar to screen you can attach external keyboard. Some of the 'larger' netbooks has almost full size keyboard that you can type comfortably for a limited period of time.
- Limited number of USB ports. You might need to invest on external USB hubs. Then again, if you are travel lots, this could be an additional thing to carry.

For further reading, have a look at The Ultimate Netbook Buyer's Guide by Trusted Review. This would at least give you general ideas how Netbook fare (at least amongst each other).

I would add that full size laptops can be had for near the asking price a typical netbook. The real decision is between processing power and graphics capabilities on the laptop side and compactness/portability on the netbook side. Here is a good source for pricing: http://www.tigerdirect.com/

Everything is a trade off. As the previous poster mentions, it depends on what use you have for it.

Even older and slower computers are way over powered for most people. A computer with older architecture can get a new lease of life by using a linux distribution. The questions come down to the following.

1. Cost. What you can afford to pay, or willing to commit. Some phone carriers around the world will offer a netbook with a 3g modem for low up front cost and monthly bills. The total cost of ownership would be higher than paying outright, but if you feel you can pay monthly service v up front it may be an option. A computer with a more robust graphic chip will cost more, however, the new graphics chips from intel and nvidia will allow even most games to run.

2. Utility. Is it for games, internet, video editing or as a portable server. Some research and decision on your use will provide you with a clue specs you need to look for.

3. Personal preference. Some people dont like small screens or keyboards. While other people love the compact size for its portability. Others need numerous USB or expansion cards, but you can work around limited expanion if you dont mind carrying a USB hub and maybe another powers supply.

4. Time. Will you be away from power when you use your computer. Is long battery life important. Atom chips will draw less power compared to Centrino.

5. OS. Do you need to use VISTA for work, or prefer XP, OS X or even Linux. VISTA is not that great on netbooks, however Windows 7 should work like a dream. Some netbooks can be turned into a hackintosh (runing Apple OS X), so that may help your choice. Many apps can be used on any platform due to such programs such as Parrells, VirtualBox and most flavours of WINE. I had City of Heroes (A MMORPG) running faster on linux with WINE than on my VISTA OS. Again, this is a choice. And such programs as GIMP, Open Office and Firefox are ported to every OS out there.

There is no correct answer. The best answer is what your needs are and what you hope to get. I hoped I helped

Netbooks are best for net surfing, video watching, playing online games and some simple office work.. but if you want do some programming and all then you should go for Notebooks.. So, netbooks are best for young generation as they don't need to do much of office related work.. I myself got Intel core processor based netbook for myself and I totally liked it..

The main limits for a netbook are graphics power (older chips like the old Intel GMA950) and netbooks are typically limited to 2GB of RAM. Very demanding applications (video editing, running Vista well) will have problems, However, they are a lot more than the internet/email machines some paint them at. They have about the same power as a 2 year old laptop and can run most applications fine.

Netbooks do have a big advantage besides small size and light weight. The combination of the smaller screen size and the very efficient Atom processor gives them FAR better battery life than a full sized laptop. Some netbooks have smaller 3 cell batteries which don't really take advantages of this, but others can take 6 or even 9 cell batteries. Netbooks also run cooler.

The netbooks I have seen don't have optical drives. Either you buy an external CD/DVD drive with a USB link, or you use another PC to transfer programs/music/etc. from the CD/DVD to a thumb drive. Most people I know with netbooks use it as a second PC that is easy to carry around.
