Which industries will do well during this American recession?

Books will do well--traditional books--because one book can provide hours of taking the reader's mind somewhere else.
Entertainment will do well: look at how well Hollywood did during the 30's and WWII. Some of the very best classics came when the country was struggling the hardest. People who still have the money will go in the evenings, and people out of work will go to matinees and dollar theatres. Or rent videos like crazy. Netflix will do very well.
I could say the food industry will do well, but 1) there is very little margin in the grocery business anyway, and 2) people will turn back to cooking from scratch as they realize that for the price of one processed ready-meal for their family, they could make two to four balanced, healthy dinners. Or the price of taking everyone out to an average restaurant, they could all eat every meal for three or four days.
So maybe cookbooks will be the big winners during the recession!

M$Internet service providers, cable TV, board games, video games - people working less and so will have more time (and desire) for cheap entertainment.
Business brokers - people laid off (with payouts) will be looking to buy themselves a job.
Education - but not just for kids. When you're going to earn less anyway, it's not a bad time to upskill in time for the next boom.

M$Niches like repo companies and collection agencies will also thrive as the economy worsens, as will companies that help firms audit their suppliers and partners in order to recapture wasted money and combat fraud.

M$I also know someone in the pet supplies industry, and he tells me that according to their market research, spending on pets is one of the last things to be cut. People cut down on cosmetics and entertainment before switching their dog to a cheaper food.

M$Not to counter the first submission but lipstick does in fact sell well during a recession, in fact, it's use has gone up during every recession since it's a cheap mood enhancer. People want to feel good about themselves during these bad times and now that so many men wear that stuff I would imagine the makeup-wearing men would add even more to the pot.
Gold, silver, and other hard assets fair well since most people want their currency to hold value during inflationary periods. Walmart since it provides cheap goods, Kimberly-Clark since they produce essentials, like toilet paper.
The entertainment industry seems good too since the writers' strike helped to cut costs by pushing "reality" television shows. By not employing good, or any, talent in writers and by substituting good actors for bad ones (because aspiring ones will work for pennies) they have essentially made cheap and easy to produce programming. The exception being CSPAN, the only reality tv without actors.
I personally wouldn't invest in any of these companies since we have been in the recession for quite some time. I, and I am by no means a guru, would be more interested in companies that do well during post-recession periods since I want to capitalize on growth. Picking up some quick hitters before the recession resolves isn't bad and if that's your game I would go with companies like the ones above.
The value of companies that have done well this recession via the DJ and S&P.
