Banks and government are two separate entities, however they do observe the same holiday schedule. The 2011 Federal Holidays for 2011 are as follows: January 1, New Years Day, January 17, Martin Luther King Day, February 21, President’s Day, May 31, Memorial Day, July 4, Independence Day, September 5, Labor Day, October 10, Columbus Day, November 11, Veterans Day, November 24, Thanksgiving Day, December 26, Christmas Day (because holiday falls on a Sunday). All banks observe the same holidays as the government offices, so they are also closed on these days.
As far as other businesses, many corporations still close on the same government holiday schedule, however, in recent years many businesses opt to observe only the traditional holidays such as Independence Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.
