Twilight is aimed at a very specific niche in the market (teenage girls, mainly) whereas Harry Potter begins as a children's book and morphs into a young adult and finally "grownup" book by the end of the series. Harry Potter has also been translated into more than 60 languages, which reaches much more people around the world than Twilight (I believe the translation count is some 15 languages at the moment?). Harry Potter also addresses much more pertinent issues (slavery, class differences, responsibility, perception of evil or "the greater good," and tons more), while Twilight addresses the importance of the heart's desire and how to fight for it (which is great, but rather a narrow focus), therefore more people are bound to continue reading Harry Potter as there is a more diverse plot than in Twilight. Harry Potter has also been around much longer, and there is a very dedicated following among those that grew up with the series.
