Well @cjd, I've thought about this question since you posted it, and I've been picking both films apart in the process.

I've seen both of these movies two times each, and in some ways these two stories follow a similar linear line. Both are stories about empowerment. Both show you a character who's life and environment are almost alien to the average person.

I couldn't even begin to imagine a life as Precious growing up without learning to read and with such a heavy amount of physical and emotional abuse. I would have cracked. I also can't imagine growing up in the House of Windsor and having to sacrifice so much all for sake of image and duty. I freak out prior to going on stage or giving a speech, but I'm sure that having a stutter would make those butterflies a million times worse. I can't even begin to fathom those emotions.

Precious was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, but only won Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress. The Kings Speech won four Oscars, including Best Picture. Both films were Oscar material.

I would say that both films have something special. They offer hope on a grand silver platter. They tell you that you can achieve what you set your mind to. They show you that disabilities are only an obstacle in life if you let them. They show you an impossible journey that is done by starting out with baby steps. Both made me tear up.

Me personally? If I had to choose which film I liked better... I would only pick The King's Speech simply because I majored in History with a focus on the UK. I am also a big fan of Collin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter. I will have both in my library of DVD's.

Whenever you have a film where the lead actor overcomes the odds and succeeds... it becomes personal to us. These characters become our totems or saints that we keep in our pocket. These types of stories become a necessary part of our society. I'm sure you'll see a pattern of these stories in the majority of films that win Oscars. Overcoming the odds is in our blood. We need a dose of it every now and then to give us hope.

I have heard of Precious, but haven't seen it yet. I saw the lead actress on Oprah, and saw some cuts of the film, will see it when it comes here. A sad story, for sure.

Maybe I shouldn't answer, because I didn't actually see Precious, BUT...

I just saw "The King's Speech" and, wow, it's hard to believe topping that one. In fact, I think it's one of the best movies I've ever seen in a number of ways. I love character-driven stories--books and films--and this was definitely that. I loved the relationship between the two main characters--King George and Lionel Logue--and the King and his wife, played by Helena Bonham Carter. The acting was top notch across the board. The cinematography was just superb, often in its simplicity. I loved the humor (unexpected by me) and the emotional moments, and there were many but not overdone. I'm also a big fan of "period" pieces--historical films--and "The King's Speech" is very much based on a true story. King George VI was the current Queen Elizabeth's father, for those who don't keep track of who's who in the Royal family.

Anyhow, if you can't already tell, I highly recommend "The King's Speech." And I'm sure "Precious" is excellent as well. I've heard many good things about it.

I am waiting to see this film, as it hasn't arrived here yet. Finally a film that is real, may win. Have seen the trailers, wonderful acting. I would say, it's a brave film.

Without any doubt "The King's Speech". By winning Oscar in 2011 in the best film category it proves its class.
