There are a number of branches of psychology that therapists use.
Psychodynamic (Freudian and Jungian) are still in use and have branches in Self Psychology and Object Relations. Most of them are still based on Freud's concepts of Id, Ego and Superego.
Behavioral and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are relatively new and have been used with great success for depression and anxiety disorders. They work primarily connecting thoughts with feelings.
Humanistic/Gestalt is a very client-centered therapy style and primarily allows the client to direct. It focuses on more existential thoughts.
The newer therapies include Narrative and Solution Focused. They primarily focus on your goal and how to get there.
There are a number of family therapies as well...
