Which countries are the most realistic favorites to win the 2010 World Cup?
France has a weak team and England has a weak defence( especially in the goals).
A lot of people fancy Brazil to win hands down. However, Brazil lack a talismanic player this time around. Everytime they won, they had a truly great player in the team: Pele, Romario and Ronaldo. This time around, they are relying mainly on team work but their main players are not that good. Kaka had a poor season at Real Madrid and Robinho had to go back to Brazil after failing to live up to the hype in England.

I'm with Lionel Messi on this one... I rate Brazil, Spain and England as the favorites.

Other teams have a chance too of course, but you asked about favorites.
Teams don't necessarily need a talismanic player to win. Brazil have become more "European" over the years.
The fact that you can point to weaknesses in every team is the very reason why a team that has imperfections can still be a favorite to win. It is not necessary to be perfect... only to be able to beat the other teams that you face. :)
Btw, I don't agree that England have a weak defense. Sure it might've been better if a keeper like Seaman in his prime was available, or if Rio Ferdinand was fit. That still leaves it as a good defense if not an outstanding one.
Also it'll be interesting to see if the conditions in South Africa suit a more English type of game. It'll be cooler and possibly wetter than many World Cups, which makes it more feasible to play at the tempo and workrate that English players are used to.
Finally, a word about Spain. What needs to said about them? They have one of the world's top keepers, maybe the best of all. Also some top class defenders, great playmakers, and outstanding strikers. If it all clicks on the day, they can be very dangerous and certainly a match for Brazil or England or anyone else that you could name.
