Which company was the first to develop the SMS and MMS technologies?

Tip for best answer: M$5.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

SMS or short messaging system was first developed by Sema Group while the standard MMS was first developed by Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). They develope it as part of the 3GPP and WAP groups. The immediate precedessor to this was Japan's Sha-Mail who introduced via J-Phone in 2001 and validated the concept of camera phone allowing users to send picture messages from one phone to another.

The company which was credited to be the first to develop the SMS technology is British technology company Sema. According to timesofindia.indiatimes.com, it was reported that: "The world's first mobile text message was an entirely naff "Merry Christmas" keyed in by engineer Neil Papworth of the British technology company Sema to Vodafone director Richard Jarvis in Newbury, southern England."

Wow, you are paying M$5 to get info for a 15k study..

Just wonder:
Will you share out part of the 15k to the best answerer if his info is indeed the info that wins you the award ?
