I think Detroit has some amazing hamburger places. The one that first comes to mind is The Hunter House, on Woodward ave in Birmingham. These babies begin with great hamburger and are smoosched with carmelized onions. The buns are steamed and the whole thing is great. I think I now have to go and get a couple of the double cheeseburgers for dinner right now! Thanks.

I am definitely biased in my answer, but I would say that for it's price and ubiquitous presence on the West Coast, In-N-Out Burger is the way to go (http://www.in-n-out.com/). That's what a hamburger's all about. The failure of many burger joints is that they try to expand their menu in order to accomodate the tastes of the masses. In and Out, on the other hand, has focused its efforts on perfecting the best burger and fry possible. They use all fresh ingredients and never freezing patties or produce; you will see employees cutting through whole fresh potatoes to make the fries.

One thing you might not know about the restaurant is the so-called 'secret menu', which contains items that are not advertised on the menu, but every employe will know what you are talking about. Ordering an item off the secret menu will make sure to enhance the flavor of your burger or fries and will place you among the ranks of In N Out virtuosos. "These variations include 3x3 (which has three patties and three slices of cheese), 4x4 (four patties and four slices of cheese), Neapolitan shakes, grilled cheese sandwich (comes with everything that the burgers come with except meat, plus two slices of melted cheese), veggie burgers (comes with everything that the burgers come with; is not an actual veggie patty, and does not come with cheese), and Animal Style, a house specialty that the company has trademarked because of its association with the chain.
