When you are looking to open a checking account at any bank you first want to make sure it's a "free checking" so you are not knocked up with hidden charges at the end of the month. You also need to know how much money you need to keep in the checking account on a 30-day basis so you don't get hit with fees.

I'ts all about the fees. Look into which bank either locally or online serves you with the least amount of fees and that's the bank you'll want to store your money at. Good luck!

In addition to what Charli said, you can sometimes find interest-earning checking accounts, particularly if you link the checking account to a savings and/or CD at the same bank. This usually requires a certain minimum balance in one or more of the accounts. The interest rate may be small, especially these days when rates are low across the board, but it's still better than nothing.
