First I must define a "sports car" as a car which has 2-doors and lots of style and handling abilities.
That said here's my short list of cars -- each of which has something which I like or admire. Most are modest.

Mazda Miata.
Toyota 2000 GT.
Datsun 240Z.
Mazda Cosmo.
Honda S2000.
Acura NSX.
Nissan GTR.
Honda CRX.
Toyota MR2.
Toyota Supra.
Mazda RX7.
Subaru XT Coupe -- gotta have at least one Subaru.
Mitsubishi Conquest TSI and later the Eclipse -- can't forget Mitsubishi.

The original Datsun 240Z, which generated the entire Z series, has got to be the best. It was offered in 1969 and are now becoming a collector's item, I saw one at an antique car show last week.

After that, the Toyota MR2 comes to mind, few were made and never got much publicity, but it's rakish angular styling on a short low chassis gave it a fast ready to race look.

The Mazda Miata with the revolutionary Rotary engine, was more cute than brawn, but became a big seller for a few years and continued in production for several years.

If you look into the Japanese car scene w/ all it's history and heritage. The so called supercar of the Playstation generation- Nissan's GT-R series would take it hands down, motorsports records (KPGC10 to CBAR35), world lap records, fastest AWD in a quarter mile record holder (BNR32), being banned for being too dominating, etc. etc. These feats are still unmatched by any to date... As Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear says "it's the only true Japanese contribution in the line of supercars." ;) Nowadays, this ain't no secret you can check reference website like wiki. :)
