First if you want to compare Norton and McAfee, then according to me Mcafee is safer and faster than Norton. You should use this if you have minimum system configuration like 1 to 2gb ram and good processor.
But if you system has high configuration then you should go for Bitdefender Internet Security. It is very powerful antivirus software i had ever seen. But most people complaint that Bitdefender slows system.Yes it does if your system is old .If you have 3gb ram,Core 2 duo processor then you should go for this.
But if you have Lower end systems then go for Microsoft Security Essentials. Its a light weight software and provide protection against virus .It is a completely free software. So there is no burden for you to check cracks for this. But your OS should be genuine to install this.I think it is not at all a great problem if you are expert in searching.

M$Norton and McAfee have become too bloated and resource-intensive lately, and they have had to create special "clean up tools" to remove parts of those programs that cannot be uninstalled properly.
I had to fix a virus intrusion on a laptop where an old copy of Norton was installed (the antivirus subscription was kept up to date, though), and it took 20 times longer to remove Norton than it did to remove the virus.
(Norton was blocking the infected file so it couldn't be cleaned, and a dropper was also present--it kept re-creating the virus with a different file name. This version of Norton's scan engine couldn't figure out what was going on.)

M$Despite being "new" in the market, Microsoft Security has received certifications from:
Westcoast Labs

ISCA Labs
https://www.icsalabs.com/vendor/microsoft-corporation
On my Windows 7 Ultimate, it uses 4 MB of system memory (pretty lightweight).
As it is from Microsoft, it integrates well with the operating system from automatic updates to an advisory to perform scan if it has been a while since the last one was performed.
It might not provide all the bells and whistles of the paid products. However, for a free and basic antivirus protection, it should be sufficient.
