One can estimate how Smuttynose ranks among American brewers, in a general way, by seeing how they have done at GABF, by far the largest and most prestigious beer competition in the USA. At that competition gold, silver, and bronze medals are given in about 70 categories of beer. That's a lot of medals; but, there are a lot of breweries each producing a lot of beers.
Smuttynose won a Gold in 2001 for their Robust Porter and another Gold in 2005 for their Wheat Wine.
That means they can go toe to toe with the best and win. But, there are lots of breweries that have done even better.
Those two beers in particular are a safe bet to hold their own against any beer in the world.
