There have been two offers on the table so far, from the Washington Nationals and the Los Angeles Angels, both in the same ballpark, salarywise. I doubt he'd go to Washington. Most players want to win and Washington is a long way off from winning anything. The Yankees have shown interest and if they come up with a 10 year deal for him, I bet he goes there. New York has a history of winning, although the Angels were in first this year too. It will be either the Angels of the Yankees.

Red sox. He is an east coast boy who wants to go back so we know it will either be them, the nationals, or the orioles. All three teams are offering similar contract lengths (7-8 years) and sizes (18-22 mill/year), but Boston has the advantage in that Teixiera has stated his desire to win and neither the nationals or orioles are close to that.

Teixeira will go to the Red Sox. Here's why:

1) Theo Epstein has a strong relationship with Scott Boras, who represents Teixeira. Other Boras clients who have signed with the Red Sox include Daisuke Matsuzaka, Manny Ramirez, Jason Varitek and J.D. Drew.

2) The only team in baseball who can outbid the Red Sox is the Yankees. The Yankees don't have serious interest in Teixeira, because they already have a multitude of 1B/DH/corner OF types in Nick Swisher, Johnny Damon, Xavier Nady, Hideki Matsui. Additionally, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez may need to move to 1B in their late careers.

3) This is sort of a wishy-washy reason, but to be blunt, Theo Epstein is a smart GM (I won't go into all his merits, but look up his drafting, trades and FA signings) and Teixeira is a smart signing for teams that can afford him. Tex is 28, in the middle of the ~age 26-32 range that most people consider to be the peak of a baseball player's career. His OPS+ the last 2 years has been 150 and 151, which is excellent. He walks a lot and doesn't strike out an obscene amount - last year he even walked more times than he struck out (97 to 93). He has hardly been injured, and he's one of the best defensive first basemen in the game.

Basically, he's a great player who shows no warning signs of slowing down anytime soon.

4) The Red Sox are one of the best teams in baseball. The other 3 apparent suitors for Tex are Washington, Baltimore and Los Angeles. Of those 3, only LA has been successful in the recent past. Obviously players prefer to play for winners.

5) As ryanima7 points out, he's from the east coast.

Then again, as we saw with Rafael Furcal today, sometimes players will take a discount to go where their heart tells them. Who knows!

Tex will most likely end up with either Boston or the Angels. Washington can not commit to that length and cost if they are serious. They have tried that before and failed. The Yankees are in it as long as Tex goes somewhere other than Boston or goes to Boston for some unreasonable price in which they will take the huge hit on Boston's wallet as the trade off. The Angels have the money, the need, and the in, and as long as Boston does not go "all in" Tex will be an Angel next year.
