Where were you/what were you doing when you heard about the Al Qaeda terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001?

They say you always remember what you were doing and where you were when a massive world event happens, can you?
Will this memory stay with you for life?
Were you actually in New York at the time?

Absolutely I remember - I was on the way to work - at American Airlines.

I remember I was about to get on the highway and had been listening to a cd in the car and remember thinking, "Man, where is everyone? The traffic is so light. Maybe there's a wreck. Better turn on the radio and see what's up." And I turned off the cd, turned on the radio and heard the news oddly enough from Howard Stern who was broadcasting in New York and reporting as the events unfolded, and not being a smart-a$$ for once. He apparently had a view of the towers and described everything as it happened. I'll never forget the sound of his voice breaking as he described what was going on.

Back then I was a little younger and never turned on the news before I left the house, so I was caught completely unaware. I remembered thinking "Holy God, it's World War III. We're all going to die." I just knew that nuclear war was the next step.

It was a terrible day. An incredibly sad day and a painful memory for all of us. I still get choked up thinking about all of those people trapped with nowhere to go, all of the folks in the aircraft and the crews... The literal defnition of tragedy.

I was in my car heading to the Anaheim Convention Center for a Compaq user conference. I spent the morning in the hotel coffee shop watching events unfold and replay with colleagues from around the country. Folks from the Northeast were renting cars and driving home.

Unfortunately we had a Compaq colleague from MA on one of the Boston flights heading for the conference. Compaq lost four other employees who were at a meeting in the WTC. I had worked with one of them on some financial services projects in Los Angeles.

An old boss of mine safely evacuated from the WTC.

I believe many people in the country were only 1 degree of separation from someone directly affected by the incident.

I worked at Sam's Club at the Membership Desk, I heard the news on my way to work, as I arrived, all the tv's were on the news channel, it was a very somber day. People would come to the desk for no other reason than to discuss what was going on. While I was at work we watched the 2nd plane crash live. We were offered the option to go home since there was very little business but I chose to stay. I really felt that I would be more use there, as my daughter was 2 years old and wouldn't be affected and we needed the pay.
I spent the day discussing the events as they unfolded with people, even people that were crying because of fear due to family/friends in the NYC area that they had no contact with. It will always stay with me. Watching the 2nd plane crash in front of me on about 20 different large screen TV's was really difficult. The few customers we had were all gathered around the electronics area and the place was eerily silent. After my shift was up I went and got my daughter and my sister that was babysitting and we went out to Pizza Hut for dinner. I felt this odd sense of caring about my fellow man. ( I don't mean that to sound odd, but I have an autism disorder and I often don't have feelings regarding things that happen to other people) We ate our 20 dollar dinner and I left the waitress a 30 dollar tip.

I was feeding my 3 month old when I received a phone call to turn on the television that the Trade center was on fire. I turned it on and heard that a plane had flown into the building and they were assuming it was deliberate. My eyes filled with tears. As I watched a 2nd plane it the other building, I fell to my knees and began sobbing like a baby and my 3 year old came running over to ask what was wrong and I just held him and my 3 month old in my arms. This was only 3 months after Andrea Yates drowned her 5 babies and I began to feel something terrible was happening.
My Husband came home from work and found me crying and he explained that Chevron had sent them all home. This really frightened me. While the first building was on fire, I slipped a VHS tape into the recorder (no DVR then) and began recording. I am glad I did. My Family began to make plans that in the event of an emergency, we would all meet at our family farm. It would be away from major cities and a safe haven to decide what to do next.
As I watched the TV, I saw people start jumping out of windows and I could not fathom being in their position. I think I cried for days. My Mother started stocking up for an attack. My Mom has since past and the back room closet is still packed with non-perishables. She had everything from medicines, foods and hygiene in huge tubs ready to go.
It is scary to know that they could just come in like that un-noticed and attack innocent people. It changed my life forever and since then, Flag etiquette has become very important to me. People need to respect the Flag and for what it stands for.

My hubby and I were in Amarillo, Texas, picking up a load of beef (he is a truck driver). We were actually sleeping in the truck when I woke up and turned on the TV. That was right before the second plane hit and they showed it hitting on TV. All the panic that was going on forced me to wake my husband up and I think my exact words to him was "we are under attack". He thought I was joking at first till he got up and turned on the CB. We must have sat there for hours just watching the news and crying. About 6 hours later his dispatcher sent him a new job order, head to Buffalo, New York. Now, all my husband heard was New York and he flat out refused the load! It took about an hour for his dispatcher to convince him he wasn't going near the city!

A little bit; it was two weeks after my 12th birthday. I'd just begun seventh grade. I got really scared, because my mom's a stewardess with United. Yeah, the memory will stay with me for life. No, I lived in Southern California, at the time.

I was home at my apartment in Kentucky. My neighbor rang the doorbell and told me to turn on the TV, I remember she looked really pale. The second plane had just hit and the towers were still up. At the time, my husband and I were both in the army, stationed at Ft. Campbell. I was actually outprocessing after over a decade in service when it all happened. It was surreal, after so much theoretical planning and role-playing, it was like a switch was flipped. The on-base security got crazy... lines to get on post were hours long, you couldn't park anywhere near buildings, no delivery trucks were allowed on post - all the Culligan water coolers went dry. The weirdest sensation for me was the quiet in the sky that night. On every military post I've ever been assigned, there were planes and helicopters constantly overhead. It was the feeling of absence that I remember most. Absence of sound, security, normalcy...

I was a high school senior on 9-11-01. On the way to my 2nd period French class, there was some talk in the hallways about a plane crash, but I didn't pay it much attention. When I arrived in my class, the TV was on and everyone was watching it. A few minutes later, we all watched in horror as the 2nd plane hit. I think up until that point we all thought the first crash was a horrible accident. After the 2nd, we knew we were under attack. For the rest of the school day, we did nothing at my school but watch news reports, discuss the events, and console each other. I'll never forget that day.

fascinating question. A repairman was working at our house. He had just witnessed the second plane hitting the building, LIVE on tv. He was justifiably very distressed. I had to counsel him. Shocking thing was, he was living with undiagnosed lung cancer. He died a few weeks later. Double very sad.

I was waking up and flipped on the monring news. I could see the smoke and I thought it was an accident when they said a plane had struck the building. Then while I was watching the 2nd plane flew into the building and I was so puzzled and knew in my heart that it was not an accident. I called my children in Alabama and Kentucky and told them to watch the news and be alert.
When driving into work we listened as the buildings began to collapse while talking to my daughter on the phone.
I was in Phoenix Arizona and the company I worked for was having an open house for it's new office and we had to call everyone and cancel becasue our CEO was stranded in another state and our Financial partner was rerouted to Canada due to the terrorist attack.
Once we made the calls we were sent home early since no one could concentrate.
I was unable to move out of ear shot of the television and radio for many days. Unable to sleep due to the eerie silence of nothing flying over head.

I was in Oceanside CA on my way to work, in Northern San Diego county it is hard to pick AM radio on a personal Radio and I heard little bits of information. I dont think the towers were down yet when first heard the news, I guessed that it was Muslims and some woman told me to shut up. you can guess what I told her. I got to work and tried to get info on the radio, I did not realize that all the radio stations including FM were just broadcasting news. I have been to New York serveral times and had been in the observation deck in the south tower, I also have taken the path subway to the WTC complex in the past, so I was quite upset when this took place, I wanted something done right then and there on the spot. I cant remember any far away event upsetting me as much as this did.

I lived on the west coast and was just getting up and getting started with my day I had FoxNews on.... I started seeing the reports coming in... at first everyone thought it was just a horrific accident. It didn't take to long for the startling realization that we were under attack. Another day added to my list of "Where were you when you heard about" JFK's assassination, Martin Luther Kings assassination, Bobby Kennedy's assassination, the Challenger disaster, etc. Must add at least one good one... "where was I when we first landed on the moon and the first human being stepped foot on it.

I was sitting eating my breakfast in front of my computer. I watched some of it on tv, then went to the mall and over there on the loudspeaker it was announced that another plane went down in Western PA, about 200 miles from me. It was a terrible day, all the way around.

I was in my high school math class. The initial announcement over the loudspeaker played down what was happening to a certain degree, but we had a live video feed in the next class and got to watch CNN for the next hour or two. It was pretty shocking - I didn't really know what to think at the time!

I was living in N.Y. I was working. Our supervisors did not tell us about it. I found out because a friend got a phone call from her daughter in Texas and then she told me.
Yes, I think, I will remember forever what I was doing on September 11, 2001. The reason is that I was in N.Y. at that time and I used to go to the World Trade Center a lot. I was pregnant at the time and got a little bit scared. I feel I am lucky to be alive.

I was on a conference call in my kitchen. I had the TV on in the other room, with the sound muted, and went in with my coffee and laptop to go through some excel spreadsheet or other on the call. I saw the first plane hit- and the call rapidly evolved into what's going on. We wrapped it up and I began calling family in New York.

I was at the Troop Medical Clinic on Ft. Campbell Ky, trying to get a physical exam that would meet the requirements for US Army Ranger School. I was in the lobby waiting on the next portion of the exam when I noticed a small crowd gathering at the lobby television. As I watched the footage of the first plane striking the tower, it seemed odd at best, and would have been a nightmarish incident even if only an accident. As I watched the live feed the second plane, came into the screen and clearly banked into its target. I called my wife immediately and told her to turn on the TV. Then I went and reported to my unit, knowing we were going to be on a short string to deploy, as Afghanistan was our area of operations. It appeared that extraneous schools would have to wait a bit.
