The first camera was actually the camera obscura. This is essentially a pinhole camera that passes light through a lens and projects the image on to a viewing surface. The image is upside down. The development was documented Arab scientist Ibn al-Haytham in the Book of Optics in 1021.
Nicéphore Niépce using cameras of his own making took the first photograph in 1817. The first photographs were not permanent and faded. Louis Daguerre invented the first practical photographic method, which was named the daguerreotype and he is commonly credited with being the father of photography. Photography first became available to the average person through the inventions of George Eastman. The Brownie camera released in 1900 used roll film and Eastman also processed the film and created photographic prints.
