Where should I look to find the best selection of small businesses for sale?
Are there any good websites or specialist magazines who would have the information, or should I consider hiring a broker to find me a good one?

Hello @santam. As you might imagine, there are many web sites with a variety of different ranges of business resources on the web. There are many that offer potential small business resources including businesses for sale and start up information. Some have links to franchise based businesses and others have more of a broker based directory - providing matching services to help buyers and sellers of businesses find each other.
A few web sites looked helpful, based on my research, here is one for your review:
BusinessBroker.net -
This site has an interactive interface, allowing individual prospective business buyers to chose parameters and search specific categories, regions, and business sizes to fit the optimum purchase target market. For sellers, listing here may help get your company in play.
According to Peter Siegel, a business adviser, it can be helpful to be listed with an broker or agent. Be specific with your parameters, have a good team of supporters (like a CPA and an attorney) representing you and be ready to make appropriate offers when a business interests you.
Good luck to you if you decide to take the plunge.
