Personally I think PHP today is much like Perl was in the mid 90's - it is popular because it is there. Every hosting platform offers free PHP hosting. That doesn't mean it's the best, by any stretch. Just that it's available. Who do you know that programs full web apps in Perl now? Sure, maybe some, but not many. Eventually PHP will go the same way.

It is obvious that php isn't the most popular language, but it is definitely ranked very close to the top. This pretty much means that it is here to stay. I have been programming for 22 years and I am yet to see one lousy language disappear.
PHP is going to stick around because it is easy and there are simply too many good free libraries for it out there. It is free and open source, so you would not have to worry about its publisher going bankrupt and the product disappearing overnight.
