Where is the best place to play online chess?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1.Internet Chess Club (ICC) at www.chessclub.com ( paid service, though clearly the best)
2.RedHotPawn.com ( free and paid available, slow chess, one-move-a-day)
3.Free Internet chess Server (http://www.freechess.org/) : This one's free but lacks certain features that the paid sites (eg. ICC above) offer.

Yahoo Games. There are always players looking for a game all hours of the night. The only problem with online chess is the person on the other end can be using a chess program to cheat.

Richard's PBeM server.

http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/chess.html

You challenge yor opponent via email, all mail goes to the server with a move command, the boardnumber, your name, your password and your move. (all that in the Subject: line of your email) If you want to make a comment to your opponent, that goes in the body of the email.

the server evaluates your move, if legal, it makes the move for you and sends an ASCII representation of the board to both players. play continues until a checkmate or a player reasigns.

Games can take a day, a month or a year. There is a timekeeper at the server that will nag you to move if you let it go for a week or so.

I still play backgammon, plakoto and mouzeltim there. great service.

signup instructions are at:

ICC is respected by those ranked 1800 plus, but http://www.chess.com is gaining and yet they unlike ICC are free and amassing their own list of GM and lesser title masters.

I use schemingmind.com for correspondence/email chess. The interface is web-based with email notifications of moves. I use a Yahoo widget that sits on my desktop and alerts me when it is my turn for any of my ongoing games.

Yahoo Games is my favourite online gaming site. They have an excellent rating system, and there's always someone to play against.

Check out World Chess Live. It's a pay site, but it's very family friendly, and it's supported by the USCF.

Many Web sites offer free online chess. I like this site...

http://www.learn-and-play-online-chess.com/play-chess.html .

You can play casual games, watch others play, create tournaments, consult about chess with other members and make friends. Check it out!
