Where is the best place to buy Photoshop?

Need to edit some Photoshop files, but don't own Photoshop. Are there any open source programs that allow you to edit Photoshop documents without purchasing a full copy? If not, what's the cheapest play to get a legit licensed version?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Adobe has a free online version of Photoshop that can do a lot of what the full retail package can:

For simple edits, this should work well for you.

Adobe also provides full feature, time limited demo's:
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/
For 60 days, you can evaluate the software without any problems.

Other than that, if you're looking for a copy of Photoshop at a good price, the best way to do it is if you're a student. If you happen to have a student number or are a teacher, or heck, know one of the two... then this is about the only way to get a solid discount on the current version.

I've heard of some folks walking into College bookstores and purchasing Adobe, Microsoft and other products at the academic pricing without the requirement of a student card or number.

I hope that this helps you out Newbey

I was going to say that you should do something similar to this. What I was going to suggest was borderline unethical. Though I don't think it is illegal. If the college found out they would not be pleased.

You don't have to buy Photoshop to get the same features, as you can get a free version online. If you want the advanced version, you can probably find someone selling it on eBay or Craigslist for lower prices than you'd find in the store.

Here are some things you might want to check out, and they are basically online versions that provide similar services to the desktop version of Photoshop.

You should try out GIMP. It's an open-source program that, for all intents and purposes, works just as well

The cheapest is if you're a student, or could legitimately become one – Adobe will sell you Photoshop CS5 Extended for something like 80% off the normal price that the rest of us pay

Photoshop has a trial version available on their website that's good for 30 days. You can use it for now, and then shop around and wait to get a better deal. My husband just did this with Illustrator, which he needed for a job for a non-profit.

He says the cheapest he's seen is Best Buy. Once in awhile you'll see a good deal on FatWallet, but if you need it right now getting the 30-day trial is your best bet.

Depending on how complicated of manipulation you need to do, you used to be able to get limited editions free with scanners. Now, Photoshop Elements comes bundled with many pen tablets.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is, by far, the best open source image editor.

If you want ease of use, get Photoshop Elements - it's cheap.

I suggest you buy Photoshop Elements instead of Photoshop. The Elements version costs under $100, while the full Photoshop version costs several hundred dollars. The Elements version is also a lot easier to learn, since it is intended for ordinary people instead of professionals.

A couple good places to buy Photoshop Element are at Costco or at Amazon.com.
