Atlanta’s airport is the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The two names on the airport are for two prominent mayors in the city’s history. William B. Hartsfield served as mayor from 1937 until 1962 and he oversaw the development of moving Atlanta from an old, southern town to a modern communication and transportation metropolis. Maynard Jackson was mayor from 1973 until 1981. He served for one more term after Andrew Young left the office. Jackson was the first African-American to serve as mayor of a major southern city. He helped smooth the transition of the immediate post-Civil Rights period in the south to the modern megalopolis that Atlanta is today. Both men left their name on the city, in more ways that simply at the airport.
